August 16, 1501: the Arte della Lana commissioned me the David
The day after the Assumption of the Virgin into heaven, 16 August 1501, I signed the contract for the creation of the David with the guild of the Wool Guild, which at the time financed the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore.
I was 26 years old but my name was already known in all the courts of Europe for having sculpted the Pietà for the French cardinal Jean de Bilhères de Lagraulas.
The contract was written in Latin, as was the case for official documents in that given historical period. But I didn’t know Latin and I never even wanted to learn it.
Over time, I demanded that all contracts be written in the vernacular to allow those who could read, including my collaborators, to be able to understand what was written on them.
There were already few people who could read and write in my time, let alone those who knew the language of the learned.
The huge block of marble that I used probably came from the Fantiscritti basin in Carrara and had long since arrived in Florence.
At first it had been dented in 1464 by Agostino di Duccio, then it was the turn of Antonio Rossellino’s attempt in 1475 who abandoned it after having created an opening between what should have been the legs.
The fact is that facing me with a block so large that it had already made two sculptors surrender pleased me a lot. Challenges were my daily bread and I also liked to win them.
Originally the David should have been placed above one of the external buttresses of the apse area of the cathedral but then, a commission set up specifically for the occasion, made up of the most prominent artists of the time, decided to place it on the arengario of Palazzo Vecchio.
Until then that place had been occupied by Donatello’s Judith, cast by the artist shortly before his seventieth birthday, between 1453 and 1457.
David “has taken away the cry from all modern and ancient or Greek or Latin statues” wrote Vasari in his Lives.
For conservation reasons, today it is possible to admire it inside the Tribuna that de Fabris designed specifically to house the marble colossus, in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.
To avoid leaving a vacancy in Piazza della Signoria, the void was filled with the copy sculpted by Arrighetti in 1910.
Your always Michelangelo Buonarroti with his stories and memories of important anniversaries.
If you want to know more about this masterpiece of mine, I recommend the book of my alter ego which tells you about its entire existence: from the extraction of the block to Fantiscritti up to the present day.
