The story of David’s most photographed copy
It was the year 1873 when it was decided to transport the David from the Palazzo Vecchio arch to the Accademia Gallery. Too many centuries of exposure to atmospheric agents and a rash restoration carried out by Costoli, were putting a strain on the resistance of the marble giant. It was necessary to protect it from further damage by placing it in the new space designed by De Fabris, which was still under construction at the time.
The municipal administration of that period wanted to fill the void left by the David with a bronze copy cast in 1866 by Clemente Papi. The Florentines, however, did not want to know of that work: the new David had to be the same in all respects to the original
At the beginning of the 20th century, between the administration of Filippo Sangiorgi and Filippo Corsini from Filicaja, a public competition was held: the winner would have made a copy identical to my David. Luigi Arrighetti, sculptor of Sesto Fiorentino, won the tender and in 1910 finally that vacant place for decades was again occupied by the marble giant.
Who knows if all those who take pictures every day under the copy of Arrighetti know who carved it … I doubt it strongly.
Your always Michelangelo Buonarroti
