Sistine Chapel: 8 April 1994, thirty years ago, the end of the restoration of the frescoes
It was April 8, 1994 when, thirty years ago, the colossal restoration of my frescoes inside the Sistine Chapel was completed.
After 14 years of work, with a solemn mass officiated in the Sistine Chapel by Pope John Paul II, that chapter that began on 10 June 1980 ended, offering humanity a renewed vision of my paintings.
If until then the vault and the Last Judgment had been perceived with dark colours, almost devoid of colour, which in some way reflected my tormented and melancholy soul, from that day on we had to deal with very bright, iridescent tones, with a palette similar to the one I used for the Tondo Doni.
Below the dark film that had been created over the centuries due to the black smoke of the braziers and candles, the animal glues based on oil, gum arabic and gall spread during restorations not carried out with modern criteria that had oxidized, accumulations of dust and saline efflorescence due to water infiltration, the colors I had used in the fresco had remained almost unchanged.
It must be said that Biagio Biagetti, director of the Painting Restoration Laboratory of the Vatican Museums, had already stated in 1936 that “If and when I can deal with it, it will not be difficult for me to demonstrate that we see the polychrome intonation of the Sistine Chapel as if through smoked glass.”
The restoration of my frescoes was directed by Carlo Pietrangeli, general director of the Vatican Museums at the time, and by the art historian Fabrizio Mancinelli. It was then physically carried out by a team of five restorers led by Gianluigi Colalucci in collaboration with the director of the scientific research cabinet Nazareno Gabrielli.
The restoration work was now unavoidable. Above all, the laying of glues given on several occasions over the centuries constituted an important threat to the conservation of the pictorial film. In fact, they caused continuous micro tears in the color while simultaneously creating an ideal medium for the cultivation of fungal microflora.
The fourteen years of restoration were constantly filmed exclusively by Nippon Television in Tokyo which had financed the intervention. The seven thousand meters of film shot are a precious document today kept in the refrigerators of the photographic archives of the Vatican Museums.
For the moment, your always Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you and will meet you in the next posts and on social media.
