La natura è madre e matrigna e non di rado capita che tenti di sconfiggere i suoi più bei fiori perché si senta da loro minacciata.

Quella che vi propongo oggi a seguire è una quartina che scrissi in occasione della morte di Cecchino Bracci. Chi era costui?

Un giovinetto dalle buone maniere, assai bravo e di mirabili fattezze che venne a imparar da me l’arte della scultura. Aveva solo sedici anni quando morì all’improvviso e lasciò vuota la mia casa. La sua mancanza m’urlava dentro fino a squarciarmi il petto.

Morì nel periodo in cui ero parecchio indaffarato con la progettazione della Piazza del Campidoglio. Suo zio Luigi del Riccio mi pregò di realizzare una bella tomba per il ragazzo e così ne disegnai una assai semplice ma raffinata. L’esecuzione però la affidai poi con tutta probabilità all’Urbino e se avete il desiderio di vederla potete trovarla nella nella chiesa dell’Aracoeli a Roma.

Scrissi per Cecchino Bracci una cinquantina di versi o meglio, degli epitaffi in rima. Luigi del Riccio s’era messo in testa di pubblicare questi miei scritti unendoli a quelli di altri poeti come il Grazzini e il Giannotti ma mi opposi con tutte le forze. Solo molti anni dopo dopo la mia morte i versi per il Bracci vennero resi pubblici con la pubblicazione di tutte le poesie mie.

La sua bellezza fu superiore a quella di ogni creatura, pur mirabile che fosse. La morte, per conquistare l’amicizia della natura, uccise la bellezza di Cecchino Bracci. La natura infatti non poteva sopportare il fatto che le sue perfette opere fossero vinte dalla beltà di quel giovane e monna morte l’uccise per farsi amica quell’incomparbile beltà.

La beltà che qui giace al mondo vinse
di tanto ogni più bella creatura,
che morte, ch’era in odio alla natura,
per farsi amica a lei, l’ancise e stinse.

The beauty that conquered the world now lies

Nature is mother and stepmother and it often happens that it tries to defeat her most beautiful flowers because she feels threatened by them.

What I propose to follow today is a quatrain that I wrote on the occasion of Cecchino Bracci’s death. Who was this?

A young man with good manners, very good and with admirable features who came to learn the art of sculpture from me. He was only sixteen years old when he died suddenly and left my house empty. The lack of him screamed inside me until it tore my chest.

He died during the period in which I was very busy with the planning of the Piazza del Campidoglio. His uncle Luigi del Riccio asked me to create a beautiful tomb for the boy and so I designed a very simple but refined one. However, I then most likely entrusted the execution to Urbino and if you have the desire to see it you can find it in the Aracoeli church in Rome.

I wrote about fifty verses or rather, rhyming epitaphs for Cecchino Bracci. Luigi del Riccio had taken it into his head to publish these writings of mine, combining them with those of other poets such as Grazzini and Giannotti, but I opposed it with all my might. Only many years later after my death were the verses for Bracci made public with the publication of all my poems.

His beauty was superior to that of any creature, no matter how wonderful it was. Death, to win the friendship of nature, killed the beauty of Cecchino Bracci. In fact, nature could not bear the fact that his perfect works were overcome by the beauty of that young man and death killed him to make friends with that incomparable beauty.
