Il 7 febbraio del 1560, Baccio Bandinelli passò a miglior vita. Lui che aveva trascorso tutta la vita ad autocelebrarsi, terminò la sua corsa verso la continua ricerca di gloria. Quattro anni dopo sarei morto anch’io, nello stesso mese.

Da quando nacque volle imitare l’opere mie senza mai riuscire ad avvicinarsi nemmeno un po’ ai miei lavori. Malignamente il Vasari narrò che fosse stato lui a far sparire parte dei pezzi del cartone per la Battaglia di Cascina ma di ciò non v’è certezza.

A distanza di secoli vi posso dire che fu un artista non trascurabile ma nacque nell’epoca sbagliata. In quel periodo lì o eccellevi o non potevi emergere. Come poteva reggere un artista non brillantissimo il confronto com me o con altri grandi quali il Cellini e l’Ammannati?

Pensate all’Ercole e Caco in Piazza della Signoria del Bandinelli, messo a diretto confronto con il mio David dal 1910 sostituito con una copia: non c’è storia. La sua opera appare tutt’altro che aggraziata, con quei muscoli che lui stesso volle riscolpire in loco perché la forte luce naturale che lo illuminava in piazza ne affievoliva le ombre.

Non pensiate che la nostra rivalità fosse un’invenzione o un’esagerazione: non potevamo nemmeno camminare nella stessa strada senza discutere. Non ero il solo a non sopportarlo però: tanti artisti e non solo lo evitavano come la peste. Sbruffone come pochi, si credeva un genio ma di geniale aveva ben poco.

Cercava appoggi e sostegno ovunque e alla fine riuscì ad entrare nelle grazie di Cosimo I e della moglie Eleonora di Toledo. Baccio volle realizzare il suo monumento funebre come massima autocelebrazione di sé, non senza tentare di ragionare sopra il mio Cristo della Pietà Vaticana.

Riuscì a collocare la scultura nella cappella un tempo appartenuta ai Pazzi in Santissima Annunziata grazie all’intervento della duchessa Eleonora di Toledo. Quel Cristo che assume una posa innaturale è comunque meglio del Nicodemo che lo sostiene: statico e inginocchiato con uno sguardo che sembra dire “Che ci faccio qua?”.

7 February 1560: Baccio Bandinelli, whom I always resented, dies

On 7 February 1560, Baccio Bandinelli passed away. He who had spent his whole life in self-celebration, ended his journey towards the continuous search for glory. Four years later I too would die, in the same month.

Ever since he was born he wanted to imitate my works without ever managing to get even a little closer to my works. Vasari maliciously said that it was he who made part of the pieces of the cartoon disappear for the Battle of Cascina but there is no certainty of this.

Centuries later I can tell you that he was a significant artist but he was born in the wrong era. In that period you either excelled or you couldn’t stand out. How could a less than brilliant artist stand up to comparison with me or with other greats such as Cellini and Ammannati?

Think of Bandinelli’s Hercules and Cacus in Piazza della Signoria, placed in direct comparison with my David from 1910 replaced with a copy: there is no story. His work appears anything but graceful, with those muscles that he himself wanted to resculpt on site because the strong natural light that illuminated him in the square weakened the shadows.

Don’t think that our rivalry was an invention or an exaggeration: we couldn’t even walk down the same street without arguing. I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t stand it though: many artists and others avoided it like the plague. A braggart like few others, he thought he was a genius but he had very little that was genius.

He looked for help and support everywhere and in the end he managed to gain Cosimo I’s good graces with him and his wife Eleonora di Toledo. Baccio wanted to create his funeral monument as the greatest self-celebration of himself, not without trying to reason about my Christ of the Vatican Pietà.

He managed to place the sculpture in the chapel that once belonged to the Pazzi in Santissima Annunziata thanks to the intervention of Duchess Eleonora of Toledo. That Christ who assumes an unnatural pose is still better than the Nicodemus who supports him: static and kneeling with a look that seems to say “What am I doing here?”.
