La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è l’opera in candido statuario realizzata da Francesco Barzaghi dal titolo emblematico Mosca Cieca.

Lo scultore milanese volle scolpire una bambina mentre sta giocando bendata a cercare gli amici che tentano di sfuggirle.

L’opera alta 93 cm compresa la base, fu mostrata per la prima volta al pubblico in occasione dell’esposizione di Brera del 1869 e fece conquistare all’artista il premio Principe Umberto. Quasi dieci anni dopo, nel 1878, la scultura fu presentata all’Esposizione Universale di Parigi.

La maestria nel lavorare il marmo di Barzaghi è lampante. D’altro canto aveva cominciato da ragazzino a studiare a bottega grazie all’intuizione del padre che si era reso conto subito che quel bimbetto fosse particolarmente dotato di talento artistico.

Francesco Barzaghi così cominciò a prendere sempre più dimestichezza con gli attrezzi del mestiere ed ebbe la buona sorte di essere seguito da due maestri d’eccezione: Puttinati e Tantardini. 

Qualche tempo dopo, nel 1851, riuscì ad entrare nell’Accademia di Brera dove proseguì i propri studi.

Fu in quel periodo che iniziò a interessarsi in modo particolare alle opere di Vincenzo Vela e non sarà poca l’influenza che ebbe questo scultore sulla sua produzione artistica successiva, riscontrabile anche in Mosca Cieca.

Barzaghi si spense il 21 agosto del 1892 a Milano, a soli 54 anni lasciandoci in eredità capolavori mozzafiato come Frine, la Dea dei Fiori e il Mosè salvato dalle acque giusto per citare qualche sua opera nota.

La scultura Mosca Cieca di Barzaghi è firmata sulla base e oggi appartiene a una collezione privata.

Sculpture of the day: Barzaghi’s Blind Moscow

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the work in white statuary created by Francesco Barzaghi with the emblematic title Blind Moscow.

The Milanese sculptor wanted to sculpt a little girl while she is playing blindfolded and looking for her friends who are trying to escape her.

The work, 93 cm high including the base, was shown to the public for the first time at the Brera exhibition in 1869 and won the artist the Principe Umberto prize. Almost ten years later, in 1878, the sculpture was presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.

Barzaghi’s mastery in working marble is evident. On the other hand, he had started studying in the workshop as a boy thanks to the intuition of his father who had immediately realized that the little boy was particularly gifted with artistic talent.

Francesco Barzaghi thus began to become more and more familiar with the tools of the trade and had the good fortune of being followed by two exceptional masters: Puttinati and Tantardini.

Some time later, in 1851, he managed to enter the Brera Academy where he continued his studies.

It was in that period that he began to take a particular interest in the works of Vincenzo Vela and the influence that this sculptor had on his subsequent artistic production, which can also be found in Blind Moscow, was significant.

Barzaghi died on 21 August 1892 in Milan, at just 54 years old, leaving us with a legacy of breathtaking masterpieces such as Phryne, the Goddess of Flowers and Moses Saved from the Waters, just to name a few of his well-known works.

Barzaghi’s Mosca Cieca sculpture is signed on the base and today belongs to a private collection.
