La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Dea dei Fiori scolpita da Francesco Barzaghi, presentata per la prima volta al pubblico nel 1878 all’Accademia di Brera.

Fin dalla sua prima comparsa questa sensuale opera non passò inosservata. Fu proposta qualche anno dopo, nel 1881, all’Esposizione Nazionale di Milano e acquistata prontamente dal comune per la cifra all’epoca elevata di 9.500 lire.

“Questa statua è tutta una lusinga, spicca dal cespo di rose con fascino molle, ricorda l’adolescenza, è flessuosa nel movimento, ben tornita nelle membra e fatta a pennello con i fianchi ampi della Dea della fecondità che rallegra la primavera, ha sulle labbra il sorriso ed alza una ghirlanda non per sottrarla al desiderio, ma per farla desiderare di più.“ Così scrisse un giornalista anonimo sulla stampa dell’epoca.

A fronte di tante lodi, non mancò qualche aspra critica alla scultura di Barzaghi come quella mossa dall’Osservatore Cattolico “la vita che traspare dal marmo ti chiama alla Dea dei fiori di Francesco Barzaghi: tu la contempli ed essa ti affascina, ma tu le chiedi un pensiero, ed essa non ti risponde, non ti eleva, non ti nobilita. Oh lasciamo la Dea dei fiori! I fiori avvizziscono , disseccano e la dea che ti affascinava ti lascia il cuor vuoto, l’animo affievolito”.

L’opera è di fatto una delle ultime sculture dell’artista milanese della lunga serie delle figure femminili nude che iniziò agli esordi della sua carriera con Frine del 1863.

Barzaghi ritrae una giovane donna priva di vesti a dimensioni naturali mentre alza le braccia al di spora del capo tenendo in mano dei fiori.

Dal piedistallo le si avviluppano alle gambe fino a raggiungere il pube e a coprirlo dei fiori primaverili.

A questa composizione sensuale e poetica si ispirerà qualche anno dopo lo scultore Vincenzo Vela per dar forma alla sua Flora.

Sculpture of the day: the Goddess of Flowers by Barzaghi

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Goddess of Flowers sculpted by Francesco Barzaghi, presented to the public for the first time in 1878 at the Brera Academy.

Since its first appearance, this sensual work did not go unnoticed. It was exhibited a few years later, in 1881, at the National Exhibition in Milan and promptly purchased by the municipality for the high price of 9,500 lire at the time.

“This statue is all flattery, it stands out from the rose bush with a soft charm, it recalls adolescence, it is supple in its movement, well-shaped in its limbs and brushed with the wide hips of the Goddess of fertility who cheers up spring, it has on lips the smile and raises a garland not to subtract her from desire, but to make her desire more.” So wrote an anonymous journalist in the press of the time.

In the face of so much praise, there was no shortage of harsh criticism of Barzaghi’s sculpture such as the one moved by the Catholic Observer “the life that shines through the marble calls you to the Goddess of flowers by Francesco Barzaghi: you contemplate her and she fascinates you, but you you ask for a thought, and it doesn’t answer you, it doesn’t elevate you, it doesn’t ennoble you. Oh let’s leave the Goddess of flowers! Flowers wither, dry up and the goddess who fascinated you leaves your heart empty, your soul weakened”.

The work is in fact one of the last sculptures by the Milanese artist in the long series of nude female figures that he began at the beginning of his career with Phryne of 1863.

Barzaghi portrays a life-size unclothed young woman as she raises her arms out of her head holding flowers.

From her pedestal they wrap around her legs until they reach her pubis and cover it with spring flowers.

A few years later, the sculptor Vincenzo Vela would be inspired by this sensual and poetic composition to give shape to his Flora.
