A 100 anni dalla sua prima visita nella città eterna avvenuta nel 1923, Escher torna a Roma con la più grande e completa mostra a lui mai dedicata, a Palazzo Bonaparte con oltre 300 opere.

Maurits Cornelius Escher, uno degli artisti del Novecento più apprezzati dal grande pubblico, nell’anno 1923 si trasferì a Roma.

Proprio per celebrare i cento anni da questo evento, Arthemisia gli rende omaggio con un percorso espositivo che avrà per protagonisti i più grandi capolavori dell’artista olandese.

Artista tanto riservato quanto geniale, Escher ha saputo coniugare al meglio arte, matematica, scienza, fisica e design. Le sue stampe e le sue litografie incantano chi ama l’arte ma anche gli appassionati di matematica, geometria, scienza, design, grafica. Nelle sue opere confluiscono una grande vastità di temi, e per questo nel panorama della storia dell’arte rappresenta un unicum.

Nel percorso espositivo saranno presenti opere celeberrime come la Mano con sfera riflettente (1935), Vincolo d’unione (1956), Metamorfosi II (1939), Giorno e notte (1938), la serie degli Emblemata e molte altre.

Dopo vari viaggi in Italia iniziati nel 1921 quando visitò la Toscana, l’Umbria e la Liguria, Escher giunse a Roma dove visse per ben dodici anni, dal 1923 al 1935, al civico 122 di via Poerio, nel quartiere di Monteverde vecchio.

Il periodo romano ebbe una grande influenza sulle sue opere successive dedicate soprattutto a vedute, architetture e scorci della Roma barocca che amò in particolar modo di notte.

Era solito trascorrere notti intere a disegnare, seduto su una sedia pieghevole e con una piccola torcia appesa alla giacca. Proprio in mostra a Palazzo Bonaparte sarà presente anche la serie completa dei 12 notturni romani prodotta nel 1934.

La mostra, col patrocinio del Comune di Roma – Assessorato alla Cultura e dell’Ambasciata e Consolato Generale del Regno dei Paesi Bassi, è prodotta e organizzata da Arthemisia in collaborazione con la M. C. Escher Foundation e Maurits ed è curata da Federico Giudiceandrea – uno dei più importanti esperti di Escher al mondo – e Mark Veldhuysen, CEO della M.C. Escher Company.

Escher arrives in Rome: from 31 October at Palazzo Bonaparte

100 years after his first visit to the eternal city in 1923, Escher returns to Rome with the largest and most complete exhibition ever dedicated to him, at Palazzo Bonaparte with over 300 works.

Maurits Cornelius Escher, one of the artists of the twentieth century most appreciated by the general public, moved to Rome in 1923.

Precisely to celebrate one hundred years since this event, Arthemisia pays homage to him with an exhibition that will feature the Dutch artist’s greatest masterpieces.

An artist as reserved as he was brilliant, Escher was able to best combine art, mathematics, science, physics and design. His prints and lithographs enchant those who love art but also lovers of mathematics, geometry, science, design and graphics. A great breadth of themes converge in his works, and for this reason he represents a unique example in the panorama of art history.

The exhibition itinerary will feature famous works such as the Hand with a reflecting sphere (1935), Bond of Union (1956), Metamorphosis II (1939), Day and Night (1938), the Emblemata series and many others.

After various trips to Italy which began in 1921 when he visited Tuscany, Umbria and Liguria, Escher arrived in Rome where he lived for twelve years, from 1923 to 1935, at number 122 of via Poerio, in the old Monteverde neighbourhood.

The Roman period had a great influence on his subsequent works dedicated above all to views, architecture and glimpses of Baroque Rome which he particularly loved at night.
He used to spend whole nights drawing, sitting on a folding chair and with a small flashlight hanging from his jacket. The complete series of 12 Roman nocturnes produced in 1934 will also be on display at Palazzo Bonaparte.

The exhibition, under the patronage of the Municipality of Rome – Department of Culture and the Embassy and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is produced and organized by Arthemisia in collaboration with the M. C. Escher Foundation and Maurits and is curated by Federico Giudiceandrea – one of most important Escher experts in the world – and Mark Veldhuysen, CEO of M.C. Escher Company.
