A trent’anni dalla mia morte, l’Accademia delle Arti e del Disegno fiorentina volle commissionare a Giulio Caccini un dipinto assai evocativo che mi rappresentasse e raffigurasse l’inizio dell’Accademia stessa.

Era il 1595 e l’artista si mise al lavoro realizzando un quadro nel quale comparivo io assai in la con gli anni, seduto su una sedia nel mio studio e attorniato da diversi modelli.

Osservando meglio si nota che sto intrecciando tre ghirlande di foglie differenti, ciascuna raffigurante un’arte: la scultura, la pittura e l’architettura. Le tre corone infatti non sono realizzate con lo stesso tipo di pianta ma ce n’è una di alloro, una di quercia e una di ulivo.

I tre cerchi che si intersecano fra di loro erano la mia firma sul marmo e furono ripresi dall’Accademia delle Arti e del Disegno come proprio simbolo trasformandoli in tre corone di foglie provenienti da alberi diversi.

Sul mio sepolcro in Santa Croce potete vedere i tre cerchi dell’Accademia scolpiti nel marmo da Battista Lorenzo affiancati dallo stemma della famiglia Buonarroti: fateci caso la prossima volta che vi ci troverete dinnanzi.

Quel simbolo delle corone intrecciate era stato scelto come emblema dell’Accademia solo dopo una disputa assai accesa fra i membri. Oltre all’intreccio delle arti raffigura la memoria di Michelangelo, rievoca l’impresa del celebre Giardino di San Marco di Lorenzo il Magnifico, allude alle tre grazie e anche alla Santissima Trinità.

The crowns of the three limbs in my hands

Thirty years after my death, the Florentine Academy of Arts and Design wanted to commission Giulio Caccini with a very evocative painting that would represent me and depict the beginning of the Academy itself.

It was 1595 and the artist set to work creating a painting in which I appeared far over the years, sitting on a chair in my studio and surrounded by different models.

Looking closer you can see that I am weaving three garlands of different leaves, each depicting an art: sculpture, painting and architecture. In fact, the three crowns are not made with the same type of plant but there is one of laurel, one of oak and one of olive.

The three intersecting circles were my signature on the marble and were taken up by the Academy of Arts and Design as their symbol, transforming them into three crowns of leaves from different trees.

On my sepulcher in Santa Croce you can see the three circles of the Academy carved in marble by Battista Lorenzo flanked by the coat of arms of the Buonarroti family: pay attention to them the next time you are in front of us.

That symbol of the intertwined crowns was chosen as the emblem of the Academy only after a very heated dispute between the members. In addition to the intertwining of the arts, it depicts the memory of Michelangelo, evokes the feat of the famous Garden of San Marco by Lorenzo the Magnificent, alludes to the three graces and also to the Holy Trinity.
