Sulle mie opere le ricerche non si son mai fermate. Da secoli continuano ad essere oggetto dell’attenzione di esperti alla ricerca di nuovi dettagli, segreti e cose celate. C’è sempre chi ne studia di nuove e vuol vedere cose che mai immaginai e chi, con ardore, si impegna attraverso approfonditi studi a trovare nuove chiavi di lettura di particolari inusuali.

La sapete la storia del dente di troppo? Oramai sono diversi anni che se ne discute e sicuramente qualcosa vi dev’essere arrivato alle orecchie.

Ebbene, un certo Marco Bussagli, esperto di anatomia e noto storico dell’arte, ha osservato che in diverse figure che dipinsi, disegnai e scolpii c’è in realtà un incisivo in più.

Pare una sorta di patologia dentaria che coinvolge diversi personaggi: dalla Sibilla Delfica a Giona, dal tale che alza la croce di San Paolo fino alle figure dei demoni che affrescai nella parte bassa del Giudizio Universale.

Perché avrei inserito questo dente in più nell’arcata superiore? Per una semplice questione estetica o per motivi ben diversi? Busagli è convinto che l’estetica non c’abbia nulla a che fare con questa questione. Avrei inserito un dente in più per sottolineare la predestinazione al male di chi li sfoggia.

Certo è che nelle mie opere niente è casuale.

E come si spiega che anche Giona e la Sibilla Delfica abbiano un incisivo in più? Mica erano figure malvagie! A quanto pare a tutto c’è una spiegazione: sono venuti prima di Cristo e quindi non erano nati nella sua grazia. Questo modo di pensare mi par però una forzatura nemmeno troppo velata. Il dente in più ce l’ha anche il Cristo della Pietà Vaticana. Un dettaglio molto difficile da notare se non guardando l’opera dall’alto. Anche Lui era malvagio? Eh, Cristo avrebbe quel dente perché, come predisse Isaia, su di Lui Dio farà ricadere tutta l’iniquità del mondo.

«La chiave di lettura offerta dal quinto incisivo ci aiuta a comprendere ancor meglio il significato profondo della volta della Sistina. Tutto ciò eleva la figura del Buonarroti al livello dei grandi teologi non solo del suo tempo» sostiene Busagli. Ma proprio sicuri che il significato del quinto dente sia quello di identificare le figure destinate al male? In questa teoria qualche stortura mi pare ci sia. Comunque come sempre in casi del genere non mi esprimo perché mi garba proprio vedervi arroventare il cervello per scoprire cose nuove che riguardano le mie opere.

E se fosse solo una semplice questione estetica? Conoscete voi altre bocche aperte realizzate da me che abbiano  un numero regolare di denti? Io no, non ne ricordo alcuna.

Osservate il Bacco a distanza ravvicinata con le labbra semi dischiuse: anche lui ha i denti e gli incisivi sono rigorosamente cinque.

The theory of the fifth incisor

Research on my works never stopped. For centuries, they continue to be the subject of the attention of experts in search of new details, secrets and hidden things. There are always those who study new ones and want to see things I never imagined and those who, with ardor, commit themselves through in-depth studies to find new interpretations of unusual details.

Do you know the history of the superfluous tooth? It has been around for several years now and surely something must have come to your ears.

Well, a certain Marco Bussagli, expert in anatomy and a well-known art historian, observed that in several figures that I painted, drew and sculpted there is actually one more incisor. It seems a sort of dental pathology that involves different characters: from the Delphic Sibyl to Jonah, from the one who raises the cross of San Paolo to the figures of demons that I frescoed in the lower part of the Last Judgment.

Why would I have inserted this extra tooth into the upper arch? For a simple aesthetic question or for very different reasons? Busagli is convinced that aesthetics has nothing to do with this issue. I would have inserted an extra tooth to underline the predestination to evil of those who show them off.

What is certain is that in my works nothing is accidental. And how do you explain that Jonah and the Delphic Sibyl also have an extra incisor? They weren’t evil figures! Apparently there is an explanation for everything: they came before Christ and therefore were not born in his grace. However, this way of thinking seems to me to be not too veiled. The extra tooth also has the Christ of Vatican Piety. A very difficult detail to notice if not looking at the work from above. Was He also evil? Eh, Christ would have that tooth because, as Isaiah foretold, God will cause all the iniquity of the world to fall upon him.

«The reading key offered by the fifth incisor helps us to understand even better the profound meaning of the Sistine vault. All this raises the figure of Buonarroti to the level of the great theologians not only of his time,” says Busagli. But really sure that the meaning of the fifth tooth is to identify the figures destined for evil? There seems to be some distortion in this theory. However as always in such cases I do not express myself because I really like seeing your brain red-hot to discover new things that concern my works. What if it’s just a simple aesthetic question? Do you know other open mouths made by me that have a regular number of teeth? I don’t, I don’t remember any. Look at the Bacchus at close range with his lips parted: he also has teeth and the incisors are strictly five.
