La Pietà fu l’opera che decretò il mio successo poi, per anni, abbandonai quel tema dolente per tornarci a pensare in vecchiaia.

Sì, vecchiaia…mi garba chiamare le cose con il suo nome. Non ero maturo, ero vecchio, con tutta l’esperienza e il travaglio di tutti quegli anni sulle spalle.

Fu la Pietà Bandini il frutto di quella nuova meditazione che mi accompagnò fino agli ultimi giorni della mia vita.

Prima misi mano proprio a quella scultura e poi, successivamente, dopo una numerosa serie di disegni per studiare quel rapporto tanto intimo quanto travolgente della madre che accoglie fra le braccia il Figlio morto, mi misi dinovo al lavoro sul marmo con la Pietà Rondanini.

Nella Bandini che avevo pensato per decorare la mia sepoltura, volli scolpire il momento in cui Cristo appena fatto scendere dalla Croce, viene affidato al dolore della Madre.

La Vergine è impegnata a “sottentare a quel copro col petto, colle braccia e col ginocchio” come scrisse il Condivi.

Sembra quasi l’iconografia di una Deposizione che diviene Pietà proprio sotto gli occhi dello spettatore.

The return to the Pietà

The Pietà was the work that decreed my success, then for years I abandoned that painful theme to return to thinking about it in my old age. Yes, old age… I like to call things by his name. I wasn’t mature, I was old, with all the experience and trouble of all those years on my shoulders.

The Bandini Pietà was the fruit of that new meditation that accompanied me until the last days of my life. First I worked on that sculpture and then, subsequently, after a numerous series of drawings to study that intimate yet overwhelming relationship of the mother welcoming her dead son into her arms, I set to work on the marble again with the Rondanini Pietà.

In the Bandini that I had thought of to decorate my tomb, I wanted to sculpt the moment in which Christ, having just been brought down from the Cross, is entrusted to the pain of his Mother.

The Virgin is busy “underlining that body with her chest, arms and knees” as Condivi wrote.

It almost seems like the iconography of a Deposition that becomes a Pietà right before the eyes of the spectator.
