Come vi avevo preannunciato un po’ di tempo fa, sono alla ricerca delle storie dei laboratori artigianali del nostro Paese e oggi voglio raccontarvi la lavorazione artistica della pietra leccese che viene portata avanti con passione e maestria da chi nel corso degli anni ha fatto della propria passione un mestiere di famiglia.

La malleabilità della pietra leccese la rende particolarmente adatta per essere intagliata e scolpita. Con il passare del tempo diventa più dura e assume quella tonalità di colore calda ambrata che caratterizza tanti palazzi, monumenti, ville e chiese del Salento.

Fortemente legata al territorio d’origine, la pietra leccese ben si presta per realizzare sculture dettagliatissime, festoni, putti e particolari ben rifiniti. Queste sue caratteristiche l’hanno resa nota nel mondo intero grazie soprattutto alla capacità di abili artigiani di creare opere raffinate, richieste un po’ ovunque.

Artigiani che a volte hanno iniziato a scolpire nella cantina di casa con pochi strumenti ma tanta voglia di fare, un sogno in testa e il terreno che ogni tanto vacillava sotto i piedi per il timore di vedere svanire tutto e dover passare a un piano B.

È la storia di tanti ed è anche la storia dei fratelli Margarito: Antonio, Marcello e Pierpaolo. Figli di un muratore abile nel realizzare volte a stella, botte e squadro e di una contadina capace di realizzare raffinati ricami su tovaglie da corredo, lenzuola e tende, tutti e tre da ragazzi frequentarono l’Istiututo d’Arte.

Cominciammo nella piccola cantina a casa dove abitavamo, tanto piccola che era impossibile utilizzare attrezzature meccaniche, anche la quadratura dei blocchi avveniva con scalpelli e pialle.

Da allora di acqua sotto i ponti ne è passata tanta e ogni opera andata in giro per l’Italia (e non solo) è sempre una grande soddisfazione per i fratelli Margarito tanto che, quando chiedo ad Antonio quale sia l’opera che più gli è rimasta nel cuore mi risponde che “Nel realizzare le opere l’impegno, l’entusiasmo e la passione è la stessa per tutte: Ci sono opere che senti in maniera maggiore ma l’esperienza mi ha insegnato che sono legate ad un particolare momento che ne determina la loro nascita.“

Le opere più importanti che i Margarito hanno scolpito sono collegate alle commissioni ecclesiastiche come l’altare maggiore della Chiesa Madre di Miggiano, il cenotafio di San Teodoro nella chiesa di Torrepaduli o la Madonna di Costantinopoli a Gemini.

Anche molti privati ci hanno concesso la gioia di realizzare opere complesse e monumentali come un camino con Pegaso ad Arezzo. Lo scorso anno abbiamo realizzato i busti di Athena e Zeus con aquila e civetta per un signore non vedente. Quella commissione ci ha riempito di gioia, più che se avessimo ricevuto un premio.

Prima di salutare questa splendida realtà artigianale ubicata a Montesano Salentino in provincia di Lecce, chiedo ad Antonio quale sia il suo sogno nel cassetto. “E’ quello di poter continuare a scolpire con bellezza e armonia, cercando di fare avvicinare un numero maggiore di persone a quest’arte nella speranza che le istituzioni, alla stregua dei mecenati di un tempo, si accorgano di quali tesori abbiano sul territorio per continuare a dare all’Italia opere d’arte degne di questo nome”

Un bel sogno che mi sento di condividere con Antonio e i suoi fratelli che oramai da 36 anni portano avanti con passione, dedizione e competenza il laboratorio artistico Margarito.

Hunting for stories: the artistic processing of Lecce stone by the Margarito brothers

As I announced some time ago, I am looking for the stories of the artisan workshops of our country and today I want to tell you about the artistic processing of Lecce stone which is carried out with passion and skill by those who over the years have made their passion a family trade.

The malleability of Lecce stone makes it particularly suitable for carving and sculpting. Over time it becomes harder and takes on that warm amber color that characterizes many palaces, monuments, villas and churches in Salento.

Strongly linked to the territory of origin, Lecce stone lends itself well to creating very detailed sculptures, festoons, cherubs and well-finished details. These characteristics have made it known throughout the world thanks above all to the ability of skilled craftsmen to create refined works, in demand almost everywhere.

Artisans who sometimes started sculpting in the cellar of the house with just a few tools but a great desire to do it, a dream in mind and the ground that every so often trembled underfoot for fear of seeing everything vanish and having to switch to a plan B.

It is the story of many and it is also the story of the Margarito brothers: Antonio, Marcello and Pierpaolo. Sons of a bricklayer skilled in making star, barrel and squared vaults and of a peasant woman capable of creating refined embroidery on tablecloths, sheets and curtains, all three attended the Art Institute as boys.

We started in the small cellar of the house where we lived, so small that it was impossible to use mechanical equipment, even the squaring of the blocks was done with chisels and planes.

Since then, a lot of water has flowed under the bridges and every work that has gone around Italy and beyond is always a great satisfaction for the Margarito brothers, so much so that when I ask Antonio which is the work that has survived the most in the heart he replies that “In creating the works the commitment, enthusiasm and passion is the same for all: There are works that you feel more strongly but experience has taught me that they are linked to a particular moment that determines their birth”.

The most important works that the Margaritos have created are connected to ecclesiastical commissions such as the high altar of the Mother Church of Miggiano, the cenotaph of San Teodoro in the church of Torrepaduli or the Madonna of Constantinople in Gemini.

Even many private individuals have granted us the joy of creating complex and monumental works such as a fireplace with Pegasus in Arezzo. Last year we made busts of Athena and Zeus with eagle and owl for a blind man. That commission filled us with joy, more than if we had received an award.

Before saying goodbye to this splendid artisan reality located in Montesano Salentino in the province of Lecce, I ask Antonio what his secret dream is. “It is to be able to continue to sculpt with beauty and harmony, trying to bring a greater number of people closer to this art in the hope that the institutions, like the patrons of the past, realize what treasures they have in the area for continue to give Italy works of art worthy of the name”
