L’arrivo della Madonna di Bruges al Bargello
L’ultima volta che la Madonna di Bruges è stata spostata dalla sua collocazione originaria fu per intraprendere un viaggio che l’avrebbe portata in Italia.
Il 5 novembre del 1953 la splendida scultura che non volevo mostrare a nessuno in Italia per evitare che mi venisse spudoratamente copiata da qualcuno, giunse al Bargello.
Fu esposta temporaneamente nel Salone delle Armi in occasione di uno scambio fatto con il Trittico Portinari di Hugo Van der Goes, per l’occasione spedito nelle Fiandre.
La Madonna di Bruges ha avuto un’esistenza complicata e assai travagliata. Vi accenno solo al fatto che durante il periodo dell’occupazione napoleonica, venne trafugata e portata a Parigi. Nel 1815 fu restituita al Belgio ma poco più di un secolo dopo, nel 1944, la trafugarono i tedeschi durante la ritirata.
La Madonna fu rinvenuta dai Monuments Man all’interno della miniera di sale di Altaussee, a poca distanza da Salisburgo. Lì erano stati nascosti 6500 opere fra dipinti, sculture, libri miniati e molti altri oggetti preziosi provenienti da ogni angolo d’Europa.
La Madonna di Bruges era stata chiusa in un cassone e posizionata poco distante dal prezioso dipinto dell’Astronomo di Veermeer letteralmente rubato al Louvre e altri preziosi capolavori.

The last time that the Madonna of Bruges was moved from its original location was to embark on a journey that would take her to Italy.

The Madonna was found by the Monuments Man inside the Altaussee salt mine, not far from Salzburg. There, 6,500 works were hidden among paintings, sculptures, illuminated books and many other precious objects from all corners of Europe.
The Madonna of Bruges had been closed in a chest and positioned not far from the precious painting of the Astronomer by Veermeer literally stolen from the Louvre and other precious masterpieces.
