La fierezza di San Pietro
San Pietro è già stato inchiodato alla croce del suo martirio e i carnefici la stanno per issare al contrario, come lui stesso aveva chiesto.
Distinguere gli amici dai soldati che lo stanno per uccidere non è cosa semplice nell’affresco che realizzai nella Cappella Paolina. Quello che invece si nota è che sui volti mancano espressioni malvagie e moti di disperazione evidenti.
Traspare un senso di paura generalizzato e aleggia un timore riverenziale nei confronti di Pietro. Alcuni guardano il martirio, altri son girati di schiena mentre qualcuno fissa negli occhi lo spettatore.
Lo sguardo che però più di tutti gli altri cattura l’attenzione è quello di San Pietro. La croce viene innalzata da quattro uomini e lui con fare imperioso solleva il busto girando la testa verso l’osservatore esterno con un’espressione fiera, quasi accusatoria.
Lancia un’ occhiata all’umanità prima di esalare l’ultimo respiro. Ha uno sguardo severo, pieno di dignità e pare voler chiedere “cosa sei disposto a fare tu adesso per testimoniare la fede in Dio?”.
Proprio lo sguardo interrogatorio di San Pietro è il protagonista dell’intera scena e non è proprio possibile rimanere impassibili. Per aumentare l’impatto emotivo di tutta la sua figura, volli affrescare San Pietro più grande rispetto alle altre figure ma senza però squilibrare l’armonia della composizione.

The pride of St. Peter
St. Peter has already been nailed to the cross of his martyrdom and the executioners are about to hoist it upside down, as he himself had asked.
Distinguishing friends from soldiers who are about to kill him is not easy in the fresco I painted in the Pauline Chapel. What you notice instead is that the faces lack evil expressions and obvious motions of despair.
There is a generalized sense of fear and there is a reverential fear of Peter. Some look at martyrdom, others are turned from behind while someone stares at the spectator in the eyes.
The gaze that, however, more than all the others captures the attention is that of St. Peter. The cross is raised by four men and he imperiously lifts his torso turning his head towards the outside observer with a proud, almost accusatory expression.
He takes a look at humanity before taking his last breath. He has a stern look, full of dignity and seems to want to ask “what are you willing to do now to testify your faith in God?”.
The questioning gaze of St. Peter is the protagonist of the entire scene and it is not really possible to remain impassive. To increase the emotional impact of the whole figure of him, I wanted to fresco St. Peter’s larger than the other figures but without however unbalancing the harmony of the composition.
