La Cappella Paolina, fin dal momento della sua costruzione, è sempre appartenuta al pontefice in carica e alla sua corte. San Pietro gira la testa verso non solo verso tutti i presenti all’interno dell’ambiente, ma soprattutto verso il pontefice. La posa che diedi proprio al capo del Santo non fa parte dell’iconografia classica fino ad allora adoperata. Il Caravaggio, anni dopo, riprese la posa nella sua tela di Santa Maria del Popolo.

Lo sguardo severo pare infatti rimproverare,senza proferir parola il papa mentre fa il suo ingresso dalla porta che si apre sulla Sala Regia. Un modo per ricordare all’alto prelato che essendo un suo successore, dovrà sopportare il peso della croce.

From the moment of its construction, the Paolina Chapel has always belonged to the Pope and his court. St. Peter not only turns his head to all those who are present but above all to the Pope. The pose that gave to Saint Peter’s head has never taken part of classical iconography. Caravaggio years later copied that pose in his painting of Santa Maria del Popolo.

His serious look seems to reprimend the Pope without saying a word while He makes His entrance through the door that opens onto the Sala Regia. It’s a way to remind the Pope that he’s Saint Peter’s successor and will have to bear the weight of the cross.
