La grande scultura di papa Pio IX in Santa Maria Maggiore
Nel cuore della Basilica papale di Santa Maria Maggiore, a Roma, c’è una grande scultura che raffigura un pontefice raffigurato in ginocchio mentre, con il rosario appeso alle mani giunte, adora la Reliquia della Mangiatoia in cui Gesù venne alla luce.
L’opera raffigura papa Pio IX ed è opera di Ignazio Jacometti.
Pio IX, al secolo Giovanni Maria Battista Pietro Pellegrino Isidoro Mastai Ferretti, entrò cardinale nella Sistina uscendone proclamato papa nell’anno 1846. A oggi è il pontefice con il più lungo pontificato della storia, dopo San Pietro: 31 anni, 7 mesi e 23 giorni.
Papa Pio IX commissionò al Vespignani il rifacimento della cripta al di sotto dell’Altare della Confessione che accoglie il prezioso reliquiario in cristallo a forma di culla. Al suo interno tradizione vuole siano conservati alcuni pezzi di legno della mangiatoia in cui venne messo Gesù appena venuto alla luce.
Il reliquiario è opera del grande Valadier e fu pagato e donato alla chiesa dall’ambasciatore del Portogallo di allora.
Per rendere più prezioso l’ipogeo, vennero adoperati ben settantasei tipologie di marmi policromi: un vero capolavoro.
Qualche anno dopo, nel 1883, papa Leone XIII commissionò la grande scultura di Pio IX orante a Ignazio Jacometti per decorare la cripta della Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Volle rendere in questo modo omaggio al pontefice passato alla storia per aver proclamato il dogma dell’Immacolata Concezione di Maria l’8 dicembre del 1854.

In the heart of the papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, in Rome, there is a large sculpture depicting a pontiff depicted on his knees while, with the rosary hanging from his joined hands, he adores the Relic of the Manger in which Jesus was born.

Pope Pius IX commissioned Vespignani to remake the crypt below the Altar of the Confession which houses the precious crystal reliquary in the shape of a cradle. Tradition has it that some pieces of wood from the manger in which Jesus was placed as soon as he was born are kept inside.
The reliquary is the work of the great Valadier and was paid for and donated to the church by the Portuguese ambassador at the time.
To make the hypogeum more precious, no less than seventy-six types of polychrome marble were used: a true masterpiece.
A few years later, in 1883, Pope Leo XIII commissioned the large sculpture of Pius IX praying from Ignazio Jacometti to decorate the crypt of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. In this way he wanted to pay homage to the pontiff who went down in history for having proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on December 8, 1854.
