La Cappella dei Principi
Con l’intero complesso Mediceo Laurenziano di Firenze ebbi molto a che fare. Mie sono le architettura della Sagrestia Nuova e le sculture che la rendono ancora più preziosa. Progettai poi l’architettura della Biblioteca annessa, i suoi plutei e il suo ricetto.
Con la Cappella dei Principi invece ebbi poco a che fare. Fu progettata e edificata assai dopo la mia morte per volere del Granduca Ferdinando I. Suo fratello, Don Giovanni de’ Medici mise la sua idea della Cappella dei Principi nero su bianco mentre l’architetto Matteo Nigetti, nel 1604, diede l’avvio ai lavori. Il progetto originale fu poi modificato negli anni a seguire in alcune parti dal Buontalenti.
La cupola che la sovrasta, alta 59 metri, è la seconda per altezza a Firenze dopo quella gigantesca del Brunelleschi.
Appena si oltrepassano le soglie della Cappella ci si trova dinnanzi a una scenografia teatrale. Gli intarsi marmorei chiamati anche commessi fiorentini la fanno da padrone e catturano subito l’attenzione di tutti. Pensate che proprio per la realizzazione di questi pregevoli lavori fu fondato l’Opificio delle Pietre Dure.
Mentre i graniti e i porfidi adoperati per rivestire le pareti hanno colorazioni poco sgargianti, sia il pavimento che le decorazioni della fascia più bassa della zoccolatura sono ricche di pietre colorate semi preziose come i lapislazzuli ma anche corallo e madreperla.
Se aguzzate la vista vedrete riprodotti in commesso fiorentino tutti gli stemmi delle città toscane che al tempo erano fedeli alla dinastia de’ Medici.
Le nicchie avrebbero dovuto accogliere le sculture l bronzo di tutti i granduchi ma alla fine ne vennero realizzate solo due da Pietro Tacca ovvero Cosimo II e Ferdinando I.
L’intenzione della famiglia de’ Medici era quella di sistemare al centro dell’atrio il Santo Sepolcro. Al tempo le trattative per comprarlo erano assai febbrili ma alla fine non riuscirono a trovare un accordo significativo sulla Santissima reliquia di Gerusalemme che avrebbe dato ancora più prestigio alla ricca famiglia.
Se avete occasione di andare a Firenze o programmate a breve una visita in città non dimenticate di passare dalla Cappella dei Principi. Vi si accede passando per l’ingresso di via Madonna Aldobrandini e il biglietto d’accesso comprende sia la visita a questo luogo che alla mia Sagrestia Nuova.

Questo che vedete è un pannello realizzato per l’altare della Cappella dei Principi nel 1864. Il disegno è di Niccolò Betti e il fondo nero è marmo nero del Belgio.
The Chapel of the Princes
With the entire Mediceo Laurentian Complex of Florence I had a lot to do. They are mine the architecture of the New Sacristy and the sculptures that make it even more precious. I also realized the architecture of the annexed Library, its plutei, its receptacle: all my invention stuff.
With the Chapel of the Princes instead I had little to do. It was designed and built long after my death. It was in Granduca Ferdinando I that he wanted its realization. His brother Don Giovanni de ‘Medici put his own idea of the Chapel of the Princes black on white and the architect Matteo Nigetti in 1604 started the work. The original project was then modified in some parts by Buontalenti until you reach the result you see today.
The dome that rises above it, 59 meters high, is the second highest in Florence after the gigantic one of Brunelleschi.
As soon as you cross the thresholds of the Chapel you find yourself in front of an almost theatrical setting. The marble inlays, known as Florentine salesman, are the master and immediately catch everyone’s attention. Just think that the Opificio delle Pietre Dure was founded precisely for the realization of these valuable works.
While the granite and porphyry used to cover the walls have not very bright colors, both the floor and the decorations of the lower end of the plinth are rich in colored stones like lapis lazuli but also coral and mother-of-pearl.
If you sharpen your eyesight, you will see all the coats of arms of the Tuscan cities reproduced in the Florentine clerk, which at the time were faithful to the Medici dynasty.
The niches were supposed to house the bronze sculptures of all the grand dukes, but in the end only two were made by Pietro Tacca or Cosimo II and Ferdinando I.
The intention of the Medici family was to place the Holy Sepulcher in the center of the atrium. At the time the negotiations to buy it were very feverish but in the end they could not find a meaningful agreement on the Holy Relic of Jerusalem that would have given even more prestige to the rich family.
If you have the chance to go to Florence or plan a visit to the city soon, do not forget to go by the Chapel of the Princes. It is accessed via the entrance of Via Madonna Aldobrandini and the admission ticket includes both the visit to this place and to my New Sacristy.
