La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Verità svelata dal Tempo, capolavoro di Gian Lorenzo Bernini ideato dall’artista nel 1646, un momento drammatico per lui.

In quel periodo sembrava andare tutto a rotoli. Dopo la morte di Urbano VIII, i Barberini non lo trattarono certo con i guanti, tutt’altro.

Venne abbattuto uno dei campanili che l’artista stava facendo edificare per la Basilica di San Pietro e con l’elezione al pontificato di Innocenzo X Pamphilj nel 1644, fu il rivale Francesco Borromini l’architetto scelto per portare avanti la fabbrica di San Pietro e fu messo da parte.

Bernini si immaginò la Verità come una giovane donna priva di vesti e sorridente. Siede su una roccia tenendo con la mano destra un sole mentre appoggia il piede opposto sul globo terrestre.

Con lo splendore della giustizia fra le mani, la verità sempre emerge, nonostante le cose del mondo.

Dovete sapere che questo capolavoro in origine avrebbe dovuto far parte di un gruppo scultoreo più ampio che non fu mai portato a termine da Bernini. Manca infatti l’altra scultura del Tempo in Volo che avrebbe dovuto rivelare la Verità.

Bernini riuscì a scolpire nel marmo solo, l’allegoria della Verità mentre del Tempo realizzò solo modelli.

Quando lo scultore passò a miglior vita nel 1680 a Roma, l’opera rimase nelle mani degli eredi che la custodirono generazione dopo generazione fino al 1924, anno in cui fu depositata a Galleria Borghese.

Sculpture of the day: the Truth revealed by Bernini’s Time

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Truth revealed by Time, a masterpiece by Gian Lorenzo Bernini created by the artist in 1646, a dramatic moment for him.

At that time everything seemed to be falling apart. After the death of Urban VIII the Barberini certainly did not treat him with kid gloves, far from it. One of the bell towers that Bernini was having built for St. Peter’s Basilica was demolished and with the election of Innocent aside.

Bernini imagined the Truth as a young woman without clothes and smiling. She sits on a rock holding a sun in her right hand while she places her opposite foot on the world.

You should know that this masterpiece was originally supposed to be part of a larger sculptural group that was never completed by Bernini. In fact, the other sculpture of Time in Flight which should have revealed the Truth is missing.

Bernini only managed to sculpt the allegory of Truth in marble, while he only created models of Time. When the sculptor passed away, the work remained in the hands of his heirs who kept it generation after generation until 1924, when it was deposited in the Borghese Gallery.
