Risale al 5 febbraio del 1519 il primo falò che feci con i miei disegni.

Quali? Molto probabilmente in quel gran numero di fogli dato in pasto alle fiamme, considerato il periodo, erano compresi quelli preparatori per la volta della Sistina e i cartoni che utilizzai per trasferire sull’intonaco fresco quanto avevo progettato, con lo spolvero o mediante incisione a seconda dei casi.

L’idea di dare alle fiamme tutta quella mole di disegni m’era venuta un mesetto prima, quando tornai a Roma da Firenze per discutere con papa Leone X de’ Medici sulla questione della facciata del San Lorenzo.

Durante quel breve soggiorno presi la decisione di eliminare per sempre un gran numero di cartoni e studi e diedi ordine ai miei collaboratori di farlo al posto mio. Poi ripartii alla volta di Firenze.

Leonardo il Sellaio, amico fidato, andò poi a controllare a casa per verificare che fosse stato fatto quanto avevo chiesto e a malincuore constatò che di tutti quei disegni non era rimasto che un mucchio di cenere.

Gli rimase il dubbio che qualcosa fosse stato salvato ma vi assicuro che ben poco fu sottratto alle fiamme.

Prese carta e penna e lo stesso 5 febbraio del 1518 mi scrisse:

E’ dichono avere ari tutti que’ chartoni, ma non chredo di tutti. Doghomi, ma la volontà vostra s’a’ a seguire, e io per piacervi meterei del mio sangue.

Di quei roghi ne feci fare altri negli anni a seguire, mandando in fumo tantissimi disegni.

February 5, 1518: the first bonfire made with my drawings

The first bonfire I made with my drawings dates back to February 5, 1519.

Which? Probably included in that large number of sheets fed to the flames, considering the period, were the preparatory ones for the Sistine vault and the cartoons that I used to transfer what I had planned onto the fresh plaster, by dusting or by engraving depending on the cases.

The idea of burning all that mass of drawings had come to me a month earlier, when I returned to Rome from Florence to discuss with Pope Leo

During that short stay I made the decision to eliminate a large number of cartoons and studies forever and ordered my collaborators to do it for me. Then I left again for Florence.

Leonardo the Saddler, a trusted friend, then went to check at home to verify that what I had asked had been done and reluctantly found that all that was left of all those drawings was a pile of ashes.

He took pen and paper and on February 5, 1518 he wrote to me:

“They say they burned all those boxes but I don’t think they burned them all. I regret those fires and your will must be carried out and I would put my own blood to please you.” Leonardo the Saddler

I had others made of those fires in the following years, sending many drawings up in smoke.
