La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è il gruppo di Sant’Anna con la Madonna e il Bambino scolpito da Francesco da Sangallo nel 1526 circa.

L’opera è posizionata al di sopra dell’altare di sinistra della Chiesa di Orsanmichele, sopra un basamento a rilievo.

Fu commissionata a Francesco da Sangallo dai capitani di Orsanmichele il 12 febbraio del 1522 per sostituire una scultura in legno che aveva analogo soggetto e che oggi si trova custodita all’interno del Museo del Bargello.

Esiste una innegabile connessione fra la scultura del Sansovino e quel cartone della vergine con Bambino e Sant’Anna di Leonardo da Vinci che, come narra i vasari, nel 1501 fu esposto a Firenze per due giorni consecutivi a Firenze e che fu visto da “i giovani et i vecchi, come si va alle feste solenni”.

Nella composizione del gruppo scultoreo, l’artista curò in modo particolare ogni singolo dettaglio a partire dalle espressività dei tre volti appartenenti a tre diverse generazioni per poi passare ai panneggi, ai dettagli che caratterizzano il capo e le vesti dei protagonisti.

Il tema iconografico della Madonna con il Bambino e Sant’Anna era assai diffuso a Firenze fin da quando, a metà del Trecento, avvenne la cacciata del duca di Atene. Dato che la cacciata si verificò il 26 luglio del 1343, giorno dedicato proprio a Sant’Anna, si interpretò quella non come una coincidenza ma come una grazia fatta dalla madre della Madonna.

Il basamento sul quale poggia il complesso scultoreo probabilmente fu realizzato sotto l’attenta guida del Sangallo stesso ed è costellato di figurazioni simboliche che fanno riferimento alla Passione di Cristo.

Osservate la Madonna intenta a leggere il libro che sostiene dinanzi agli occhi con la mano destra: probabilmente sta leggendo i profeti che narrano l’epilogo della vita del Figlio o addirittura la Passione del Figlio nei Vangeli che verranno scritti dopo la Sua morte.

Il Sangallo volle lasciare la sua firma sull’opera e, a caratteri capitali, scolpì sulla cintura di Sant’Anna FRANCISCUS SANGALLO FACIEBAT.

Sculpture of the day: Saint Anne with the Madonna and Child by Sangallo

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the group of Saint Anne with the Madonna and Child sculpted by Francesco da Sangallo in around 1526.

The work is positioned above the left altar of the Church of Orsanmichele, on a relief base. It was commissioned to Francecsco da Sangallo by the captains of Orsanmichele on 12 February 1522 to replace a wooden sculpture that had a similar subject and which today is kept inside the Bargello Museum.

There is an undeniable connection between Sansovino’s sculpture and that cartoon of the Virgin with Child and Saint Anne by Leonardo da Vinci which, as the vasari narrates, in 1501 was exhibited in Florence for two consecutive days and which was seen by “young people and the old, how to go to solemn parties”.

In composing the sculptural groups, the artist paid particular attention to every single detail starting from the expressiveness of the three faces belonging to three different generations and then moving on to the drapery, to the details that characterize the head and clothes of the protagonists.

The iconographic theme of the Madonna with Child and Saint Anne was widespread in Florence ever since the expulsion of the Duke of Athens in the mid-fourteenth century. Given that the expulsion occurred on 26 July 1343, the day dedicated to Saint Anna, it was interpreted not as a coincidence but as a grace given by the mother of the Madonna.

The base on which the sculptural complex rests was probably created under the careful guidance of Sangallo himself and is dotted with symbolic figures that refer to the Passion of Christ.

Observe the Madonna intent on reading the book that she holds before her eyes with her right hand: she is probably reading the prophets who narrate the epilogue of the life of her Son or even the Passion of her Son in the Gospels that will be written after her death.

Sangallo wanted to leave his signature on the work and, in capital letters, sculpted FRANCISCUS SANGALLO FACIEBAT on the belt of Saint Anne.
