L’Anima Dannata è un mio disegno che realizzai fra il 1525 e il 1530 per Gherardo Perini a lapis nero su carta dipinta di grigio.

Il volto di questo uomo che sta urlando è animato da una violentissima passione. Per rendere più reale il suo sfogo d’ira, misi in moto tutti i muscoli del volto, stirandoli o contraendoli a seconda di ciò che accade loro proprio nel bel mezzo di un moto d’ira come questo.

Guardate bene le vene giugulari gonfia di sangue così come le arterie carotidi, il pomo d’Adamo ben evidenziato e i muscoli della fronte contratti al massimo.

Per rendere la scena ancora più drammatica e ricca di tensione, ho sollevato i capelli dell’uomo con una folata di vento mettendo alle sue spalle un panno gonfiato dalla stessa impetuosa folata di vento.

Aguzzando la vista in alto si legge la scritta a inchiostro bruno a caratteri romani GHERARDUS DE PERINIS mentre in basso a destra si legge MICHELAN BONAROTI FACIEBAT e si vedono i tre cerchi intrecciati.

Passò davvero poco tempo dal momento in cui realizzai questi disegno alla sua celebrità. Infatti già nella seconda metà del Cinquecento era assai conosciuto tanto che Antonio Salamanca, nel 1562, volle copiarlo per un’incisione.

Il Wilde suppone che le scritte presenti sul foglio non siano di mano mia bensì del Perini che lo ricevette in dono. Successivamente questo foglio entrò a far parte della collezioni granducali di Francesco I de’ Medici, figliolo di Cosimo I e Bianca Cappello. Oggi appartiene al Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle stampe della Galleria degli Uffizi, inventariato con il numero 601.

The Damned Soul designed for Perini

The Damned Soul is a drawing of mine that I made between 1525 and 1530 for Gherardo Perini in black pencil on gray painted paper.

Sharpening the view at the top you can read the writing in brown ink in Roman characters GHERARDUS DE PERINIS while at the bottom right you can read MICHELAN BONAROTI FACIEBAT and you can see the three intertwined circles.

The face of this man who is screaming is animated by a violent passion. To make his outburst of anger more real, I set all the muscles in his face in motion, stretching or contracting them depending on what happens to them right in the middle of a fit of anger like this.

Take a good look at the jugular veins swollen with blood as well as the carotid arteries, the Adam’s apple clearly highlighted and the muscles of the forehead contracted to the maximum.

To make the scene even more dramatic and full of tension, I lifted the man’s hair with a gust of wind by placing a cloth swollen by the same impetuous gust of wind behind him.

Very little time passed from the moment I made this drawing to his stardom. In fact, already in the second half of the sixteenth century it was well known, so much so that Antonio Salamanca, in 1562, wanted to copy it for an engraving.

Wilde supposes that the writings on the sheet are not by my hand but by Perini who received it as a gift. Later this sheet became part of the grand-ducal collections of Francesco I de ‘Medici, son of Cosimo I and Bianca Cappello. Today it belongs to the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Uffizi Gallery, inventoried under the number 601.
