Cominciare a imparare i rudimenti della pittura per me non fu roba facile. Il mi babbo aspirava a un bell’impiego per me e diventare un artista non riteneva fosse dignitoso.

Copiare le opere altrui e disegnarle su carta era quello che mi piaceva fare. Certo la carta costava un occhio della testa e non era facile reperirne un po’ senza un quattrino in tasca ma, come scrisse il Vasari raccontando la mia vita, tutto il tempo che avevo a disposizione mi nascondevo da qualche parte a disegnare. Lo facevo di nascosto perché “dal padre e da’ suoi maggiori gridato e talvolta battuto”.

La mi mamma era morta da troppi anni e il mi babbo voleva farmi studiare a tutti i costi grammatica e mi mandò da Francesco Galatea. Alla fine però vinsi io e si convinse a farmi cominciare andare a bottega da Domenico e Davide di Tommaso di Currado Bigordi, meglio noti alle cronache come i fratelli Ghirlandaio. Proprio in quel frangente stavano lavorando agli affreschi di Santa Maria Novella a Firenze.

In genere i bimbetti come me mica venivano pagati: avevo tredici anni e l’insegnamento avrebbe dovuto essere tutta la ricompensa a cui potevo aspirare.

Invece io venivo pagato, poghino ma venivo pagato. Era un onore non da poco visto che i Ghirlandaio godevano di un’ottima fama.

Così il primo aprile del 1488 il mi babbo stipulò un contratto con i due sottoscrivendo che avrei dovuto fare quello che mi comandavano e sarei rimasto fino a quando non avessi imparato perbene i rudimenti della pittura. Quanto mi pagavano? 24 fiorini di suggello spalmati in tre anni.

Rimasi meno dei tre anni prestabiliti perché prima di quel termine, entrai a far parte del nugolo di talentuosi ragazzi che, alla corte del Magnifico e sotto l’attenta guida di Betoldo da Giovanni, imparavano i rudimenti della scultura.

Sapete cosa sono i fiorini di suggello? In pratica di questi fiorini d’oro veniva controllato scrupolosamente il peso e il conio.

Otto orafi controllavano il peso e la qualità dell’oro e poi sigillavano le monete in un sacchetto. Quelle che erano state limate o che comunque avevano un peso ridotto, venivano scartate. Quindi i 24 fiorini con cui i Ghirlandaio mi avrebbero pagato per l’apprendistato, avrebbero dovuto essere di qualità eccellente, con un valore corrispondente in oro pari al loro peso.
