Che non avessi un grande tatto è cosa nota come è noto non fossi amato per le doti diplomatiche che non possedevo. Meno noto è invece il fatto che infondevo un sentimento di paura anche nei papi.

Dopo la morte prematura di Raffaello avvenuta il 6 aprile del 1520, Sebastiano del Piombo che al tempo ancora era amico mio, cominciò a sperare di poter avere la possibilità di portare a termine alcuni suoi lavori che aveva già cominciato in Vaticano.

In particolare voleva metter mano alle decorazioni della Sala di Costantino e pretendeva lo raccomandassi al cardinale Giulio de’ Medici, futuro papa Clemente VII. In quel momento Giulio de’ Medici si trovava a Firenze dove fra l’altro ero anch’io, impelagato nel progetto della facciata del San Lorenzo.

Sebastiano aveva il vizio di chiedermi continuamente favori: già l’aveva fatto anni prima con la Resurrezione di Lazzaro. Ancora non aveva ricevuto il pagamento che gli si spettava e mi chiese che in virtù della mia autorevolezza, di chiedere quei soldi al committente.

In una lettera in cui mi chiedeva l’ennesima intercessione che mi scrisse il 27 ottobre del 1520, Sebastiano fece riferimento al rapporto che avevo con il papa di allora: Clemente VII. Certo lo conoscevo assai bene tanto che da ragazzi s’era stati tutti e due a desinare alla corte di Lorenzo il Magnifico che altro non era che suo zio.

Nelle poche righe estratte da quella lunga lettera si capisce bene quanto timore potessi incutere anche in lui, il papa solo di qualche anno più giovane di me.

“Io so in che conto vi tien el Papa, et quando parla de vui par rasoni de un suo fratello, quassi con le lacrime algli occhii; perchè m’ha decto a me vui sette nutriti insiemi, et dimostra conoscervi et amarvi, ma facte paura a ognuno, insino a’ papi!”
