Dei, eroi e miti antichi e moderni stanno per accogliere i visitatori a Villa Carlotta grazie alla mostra “L’Olimpo sul lago. Canova, Thorvaldsen, Hayez e i tesori della Collezione Sommariva”.

Un percorso espositivo affascinante e ricco di pathos, curato da Fernando Mazzocca, Maria Angela Previtera ed Elena Lissoni, ispirato da Giovanni Battista Sommariva, mecenate e collezionista insaziabile di capolavori straordinari.

Sommariva fu un abile politico e il braccio destro di Napoleone a Milano. Uno dei più grandi e noti collezionisti presenti in Europa e non solo fra l’Impero e la Restaurazione. Pensate che, quando nel 1802 terminò la sua carriera politica, Sommariva oramai aveva collezionati capolavori stupefacenti che valevano una fortuna impossibile da quantificabile.

La sua raccolta era una delle più prestigiose dei suoi tempi, assieme a quelle dei familiari più stretti di Napoleone come per esempio la raccolta di Josephine. Custodiva le opere nel palazzo di Parigi ubicato in una delle zone più prestigiose della città e nella Villa di Tremezzo sul Lago di Como, oggi nota come Villa Carlotta.

Possedeva straordinari dipinti antichi e capolavori di artisti a lui contemporanei come Jacques-Louis David, Hayez, Prud’hon, Girodet, Wicar, Appiani. A fare invidia al mondo intero erano soprattutto le opere di Canova e le preziose sculture di Thorvaldsen custodite a Villa Sommariva tanto che viaggiatori illustri come Stendhal, Lady Morgan e Flaubert giungevano alla villa con lo scopo di ammirarle.

Attraverso una selezione delle opere più note della collezione quali sculture, dipinti, stampe, gioielli e miniature, Villa Carlotta celebrerà dal 22 giugno fino al 30 settembre Sommariva e il suo collezionismo.

Olympus on the lake: Canova, Thorvaldsen, Hayez and the treasures of the Sommariva Collection at Villa Carlotta

Ancient and modern gods, heroes and myths are about to welcome visitors to Villa Carlotta thanks to the exhibition “Olympus on the lake. Canova, Thorvaldsen, Hayez and the treasures of the Sommariva Collection”.

A fascinating exhibition itinerary full of pathos, curated by Fernando Mazzocca, Maria Angela Previtera and Elena Lissoni, inspired by Giovanni Battista Sommariva, patron and insatiable collector of masterpieces.

Sommariva was a skilled politician and Napoleon’s right-hand man in Milan. One of the largest and most well-known collectors present in Europe and not only between the Empire and the Restoration. Consider that when his political career ended in 1802, Sommariva had already collected astonishing masterpieces that were worth an impossible-to-quantify fortune.

His collection was one of the most prestigious of his time, along with those of Napoleon’s closest family members such as Josephine’s collection. He kept the works in the palace in Paris located in one of the most prestigious areas of the city and in the Villa di Tremezzo on Lake Como, today known as Villa Carlotta.

He owned extraordinary ancient paintings and masterpieces by contemporary artists such as Jacques-Louis David, Hayez, Prud’hon, Girodet, Wicar, Appiani. Above all, the works of Canova and the precious sculptures of Thorvaldsen kept at Villa Sommariva were the envy of the whole world, so much so that illustrious travelers such as Stendhal, Lady Morgan and Flaubert came to the villa with the aim of admiring those works.
