Questa mattina è stata inaugurata la nuova uscita d’autore del Museo delle Cappelle Medicee caratterizzata da una singolare forma a sepolcro in continuità con la storia, l’architettura e la destinazione d’uso della cripta, della Sagrestia Nuova e della Cappella dei Principi.

La nuova uscita progettata dallo Studio di Architettura Zermani e Associati ha l’aspetto di un grande sarcofago dal quale i visitatori usciranno dalle tenebre della cripta ritrovando al cospetto della luce del cielo che li inonderà dall’alto.

Posta su via Canto dei Nelli, nella zona delimitata dalla Cappella dei Principi, la Sagrestia Nuova e l’estremità del transetto della Basilica di San Lorenzo, la nuova uscita è formata dal parallelepipedo di perimetrazione delle scale e la seduta di analoghe dimensioni, posizionata al centro della piazza.

La soluzione architettonica innovativa è in armonia con il complesso delle Cappelle Medicee e la sua complessa storia.

Non solo il flusso dei visitatori sarà gestito in modo migliore al termine del percorso museale ma sarà possibile visitare, dopo decenni di chiusura, la Cripta lorenese, scoprire un tratto delle antiche e imponenti mura medievali fiorentine riemerse durante gli scavi e perdersi fra gli espositori del nuovo e ampio bookshop prima di riemergere sulla piazza che dà sul Canto dei Nelli.

Dopo anni di intensi lavori, eseguiti senza mai chiudere il museo un solo giorno alle visite, viene consegnato al pubblico il nuovo passaggio, perfettamente integrato nel contesto storico e artistico, in grado di confrontarsi con la storia, le opere e le architetture del passato.

Ma c’è una ulteriore novità. l’apertura della mia Stanza Segreta che, com eha annunciato Osanna, verrà aperta in via sperimentale dai primi giorni di Novembre. Ve ne ho parlato nel dettaglio QUA.

Dal piano della piazza il grande sarcofago in Travertino di Rapolano a superficie opaca riemerge per tre metri e cinquanta e si apre verso il lacerto fra San Lorenzo e la Cappella dei Principi.

Dall’oscurità del piano interrato della cripta si torna verso la vitalità della città ritrovandosi dinnanzi alla pietra tombale ribaltata che un tempo chiudeva quell’oscuro sepolcro, divenuto invece seduta.

Sul significato di questo stare si confrontano venti secoli di storia dell’arte Occidentale, a partire da una scena che il Vangelo di Luca riassume così: “Trovarono che la pietra era stata rimossa dal sepolcro e, entrate, non trovarono il corpo del Signore Gesù. Mentre si domandavano che senso avesse tutto questo, ecco due uomini presentarsi a loro in abito sfolgorante. Le donne, impaurite, tenevano il volto chinato a terra, ma quelli dissero loro: «Perché cercate tra i morti colui che è vivo?”

Come accennato prima, sarà di nuovo possibile visitare anche la Cripta Lorenese, costruita dall’architetto Emilio De Fabris per gli eredi dei granduchi Asburgo–Lorena nel 1873 chee chiusa al pubblico da vari decenni.

In vista della riapertura è stata liberata e restaurata interamente: dalla pulitura e lucidatura dei pavimenti con il reintegro delle lacune sia nel marmo bianco sia nel bardiglio e sia nelle scritte delle epigrafi, dell’altare, degli strombi in pietra serena delle due finestre, delle lapidi marmoree alle pareti e intorno al pilastro centrale con le relative cornici in pietra serena, danneggiate dallo sporco e da schizzi di varie sostanze, di cui alcune oleose portate dall’alluvione del 1966.

Gli stessi danni erano riscontrabili anche sulla parte inferiore della lapide commemorativa nell’abside della Cripta medicea, anche in questo caso non è stato possibile rimuovere del tutto queste tracce ma sono state visibilmente attenuate dal restauro.

E’ stato inoltre realizzato un nuovo impianto di illuminazione e due nuove vetrate che consentono di apprezzare al meglio la tomba di Cosimo il Vecchio del Verrocchio.

Medici Chapels: the new release that evokes the uncovered tomb

This morning the new signature exit of the Museum of the Medici Chapels was inaugurated, characterized by a singular tomb shape in continuity with the history, architecture and intended use of the crypt, the New Sacristy and the Chapel of the Princes.

The new exit designed by the Zermani e Associati Architecture Studio has the appearance of a large sarcophagus from which visitors will emerge from the darkness of the crypt and find themselves in the presence of the light of the sky that will flood them from above.

Located on via Canto dei Nelli, in the area delimited by the Chapel of the Princes, the New Sacristy and the end of the transept of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the new exit is formed by the parallelepiped surrounding the stairs and the seat of similar dimensions, positioned at the center of the square.

The innovative architectural solution is in harmony with the Medici Chapels complex and its complex history. Not only will the flow of visitors be better managed at the end of the museum tour but it will be possible to visit, after decades of closure, the Lorraine Crypt, discover a section of the ancient and imposing medieval Florentine walls re-emerged during the excavations and get lost among the exhibitors of the new and large bookshop before re-emerging on the square overlooking the Canto dei Nelli.

After years of intense work, carried out without ever closing the museum for visits for a single day, the new passage is delivered to the public, perfectly integrated into the historical and artistic context, capable of dealing with the history, works and architecture of the past.

From the level of the square the large sarcophagus in Rapolano Travertine with an opaque surface re-emerges for three and a half meters and opens towards the fragment between San Lorenzo and the Cappella dei Principi.

From the darkness of the basement of the crypt you return to the vitality of the city, finding yourself in front of the overturned tombstone that once closed that dark tomb, which has instead become a seat.

Twenty centuries of Western art history are compared on the meaning of this standing, starting from a scene that the Gospel of Luke summarizes thus: “They found that the stone had been removed from the tomb and, when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus While they were wondering what the point of all this was, two men appeared before them in dazzling suits. The women, frightened, kept their faces bowed to the ground, but they said to them: “Why do you seek among the dead the one who is alive?”

As mentioned before, it will again be possible to visit the Lorraine Crypt, built by the architect Emilio De Fabris for the heirs of the Habsburg-Lorraine grand dukes in 1873 which has been closed to the public for several decades.

In view of the reopening, it was completely freed and restored: from the cleaning and polishing of the floors with the reintegration of the gaps both in the white marble and in the bardiglio and in the writings of the epigraphs, of the altar, of the pietra serena splays of the two windows, of the marble headstones on the walls and around the central pillar with the related pietra serena frames, damaged by dirt and splashes of various substances, some of which were oily brought by the flood of 1966.

The same damage was also found on the lower part of the commemorative plaque in the apse of the Medici Crypt. Even in this case it was not possible to completely remove these traces but they were visibly attenuated by the restoration.

A new lighting system and two new windows were also created which allow you to better appreciate Verrocchio’s tomb of Cosimo the Elder.
