15 agosto: l’Assunta nell’arte
Oggi si celebra l’Assunzione di Maria in cielo.
Il 15 d’agosto, anche se a guardarsi in giro non sembrerebbe, non è solo la giornata dedicata al cocomero, alle secchiate d’acqua e ai pranzi luculliani ma anche alla Madonna che alla fine della sua vita ascese al cielo senza lasciare le sue spoglie mortali sulla terra. Una sorta di anticipazione di quello che accadrà alla fine dei tempi per tutti.
Nel corso dei secoli sono tanti gli artisti che si sono cimentati nel rappresentare questo evento in modi abbastanza simili fra di loro. Ad uscire un po’ dagli schemi ci pensarono il Mantegna prima e il Caravaggio dopo, dipingendo la Madonna sul letto di morte circondate da figure assai disperate per il suo passaggio dalla vita mortale a quella eterna.
Caravaggio essendo un geniale fuoriclasse, non veniva compreso dai contemporanei. L’opera gli venne rifiutata dall’ordine religiosi dei Carmelitani Scalzi che l’avevano commissionata: la Madonna a loro detta non rispettava affatto l’iconografia classica, i suoi piedi nudi e le caviglie scoperte, nessun riferimento alla sua misticità….non la vollero e la comprò successivamente il Duca di Mantova su suggerimento di Rubens.
Parlando però delle vere e proprie Assunzioni in cielo della Vergine non si può non menzionare il rilievo di Donatello che scolpì fra il 1456 e il 1428. Si trova all’interno della chiesa napoletana di Sant’Angelo a Nilo e fa parte della tomba Brancaccio. Questa tomba fu realizzata da Michelozzo affiancato da Donatello. Il rilievo dell’Assunzione è certamente di mano del grande scultore fiorentino quattrocentesco.
Personalmente non mi sono mai confrontato con questo tema ma ci sono artisti che lo hanno fatto in maniera magistrale sia prima che dopo di me. Fra le più note e suggestive c’è sicuramente quella di Tiziano.
Si tratta di un dipinto a olio realizzato attorno al 1518 e si trova a Venezia, sull’altare della Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. Fu un’opera che già a suo temo fece scalpore per la sua indiscutibile bellezza. La tela venne commissionata dai francescani che risedevano all’interno del convento dei Frari e ancora oggi si trova nell’originale collocazione.
L’Assunta di Tiziano
Qualche anno dopo Tiziano volle cimentarsi con la realizzazione di un altro dipinto a olio su tela con il medesimo soggetto. Quest’altra opera dell’Assunta in cielo si trova nel Duomo di Verona e decora una delle cappelle laterali.
Prima di lasciarvi ai festeggiamenti di questa giornata vi propongo anche l’Assunzione della Vergine di Annibale Caracci.
Si trova nella Cappella Cerasi di Santa Maria del Popolo a Roma, la stessa Cappella che accoglie la Crocifissione di San Pietro e la Conversione di San Paolo di Caravaggio. Fu una delle commissioni più importanti che ricevette il Caracci oltre a quelle della famiglia Farnese.

August 15: the Assumption in art
Today we celebrate the Assumption of Mary into heaven. The 15th of August, even if looking around it would not seem, is not only the day dedicated to the watermelon, the buckets of water and the Lucullian lunches but also to the Madonna who at the end of her life ascended to heaven without leaving her mortal spoil on earth. A sort of anticipation of what will happen at the end of time for everyone.
Over the centuries there are many artists who have tried their hand at representing this event in ways that are quite similar to each other. Mantegna first thought about getting out of the box and then Caravaggio after painting the Madonna on his deathbed surrounded by very desperate figures for her passage from mortal to eternal life.
Caravaggio being a brilliant champion, he was not understood by his contemporaries. The work was refused him by the religious order of the Discalced Carmelites who had commissioned it: the Madonna, according to them, did not respect the classical iconography at all, her bare feet and uncovered ankles, no reference to her mysticism …. not her the Duke of Mantua later wanted and bought it at the suggestion of Rubens.
However, speaking of the real Assumptions of the Virgin into heaven, one cannot fail to mention the relief by Donatello that he sculpted between 1456 and 1428. It is located inside the Neapolitan church of Sant’Angelo a Nilo and is part of the Brancaccio tomb. This tomb was built by Michelozzo flanked by Donatello. The relief of the Assumption is certainly by the hand of the great fifteenth-century Florentine sculptor.
Personally I have never confronted myself with this theme but there are artists who have done it in a masterly way both before and after me. Among the best known and most evocative is certainly that of Titian.
It is an oil painting made around 1518 and is located in Venice, on the altar of the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. It was a work that, even to fear of him, caused a sensation due to its indisputable beauty. The canvas was commissioned by the Franciscans who resided inside the Frari convent and is still in its original location today.
A few years later Titian wanted to try his hand at creating another oil painting on canvas with the same subject. This other work of the Assumption into Heaven is located in the Cathedral of Verona and decorates one of the side chapels.
Before leaving you to the celebrations of this day, I also propose the Assumption of the Virgin by Annibale Caracci.
It is located in the Cerasi Chapel of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, the same chapel that houses the Crucifixion of St. Peter and the Conversion of St. Paul by Caravaggio. It was one of the most important commissions that Caracci received in addition to those of the Farnese family.
