Questa mattina mi son svegliato in una Firenze battuta dalla pioggia e invece di andarmene fuori da Santa croce che troppe volte mi sta stretta, ho preferito sedermi davanti al mio portatile per raccontarvi la storia di un dipinto che realizzai da ragazzino.
Si tratta di una copia dell’incisione realizzata da Martin Schongauer: le Tentazioni di Sant’Antonio.

Ebbi la possibilità di conoscere questa incisione a bottega dai fratelli Ghirlandaio e mi venne la brillante idea di copiarla e di colorarla a modo mio. Mi pare fosse l’anno 1487 o giù di lì. Dopo aver riportato su una tavoletta ogni dettaglio del Santo in levitazione ossessionato da demoni, non mi accontentai.

Mi sembrava che avesse poco senso in bianco e nero. Andai a fare un giro al mercato del pesce per osservare la forma e i colori delle squame, dei loro occhi e delle loro branchie.

Tornai davanti alla tavola e macinai tutti i colori che mi servivano per colorire il Sant’Antonio. Alla fine venne fuori proprio un bel lavoro e mi ricordo che riuscii a suscitare l’interesse e l’ammirazione in molte persone nonostante avessi circa una quindicina d’anni.

Come molte mie altre opere giovanili, anche questa è andata perduta. Si mormora che sia stata battuta da Soterby’s una tavoletta che corrisponde alla descrizione di quella che feci io ma non l’ho ancora vista di persona e non posso dirvi se sia mia o meno… credo però che anche se lo sapessi non ve lo direi: mi piace vedervi ammattire tentando di trovare opere andate perdute!

L’opera che vi ho messo qua sopra è quella che alcuni sostengono sia mia. Attualmente è conservata presso il Kimbell Art Museum di Forth Worth in Texas, Stati Uniti d’America.

I will tell you the story of a youthful work: the temptations of Saint Anthony

This morning I woke up in a Florence beaten by the rain and instead of going out of Santa Croce that too often is tight, I preferred to sit in front of my laptop to tell the story of a painting that I realized as a boy.
This is a copy of the engraving by Martin Schongauer: Temptations of St. Anthony.

I had the opportunity to get to know this engraving in the workshop by the Ghirlandaio brothers and I had the brilliant idea to copy it and to color it in my own way. I think it was the year 1487 or so. After reporting on a tablet every detail of the Saint in levitation obsessed with demons, I did not content myself. It seemed to me that it made little sense in black and white. I went for a walk around the fish market to observe the shape and colors of the scales, their eyes and their gills.

I went back to the table and grinded all the colors I needed to color the Saint Anthony. In the end a good job came out and I remember that I was able to arouse the interest and admiration in many people even though I was about fifteen years old.

Like many of my other youth works, this one has also been lost. It is rumored that Soterby’s was a tablet that corresponds to the description of what I did but I have not seen it in person and I can not tell if it is mine or not … but I think that even if I knew I would not tell you: I like to see you mad trying to find lost works!

The work I put you above is what some claim is mine. It is currently housed at the Kimbell Art Museum in Forth Worth, Texas, United States of America.
