La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Leggitrice di Pietro Magni, scolpita dall’artista nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento.

Magni volle dare alla scultura della Leggitrice un grande realismo. Ispirato dalla Preghiera del Mattino di Vincenzo Vela ma anche dai dipinti di Hayez, scelse una posa spontanea, con quella parziale torsione del busto.

La giovane, seduta al contrario sulla sedia impagliata, adopera lo schienale come se fosse un leggio. L’attenzione posta al particolare è massima. Osservando da vicino l’opera, avrete modo di cogliere la presenza di una lacrima che le scivola sulla guancia.

La Leggitrice senza dubbio è l’opera più nota dello scultore Magni. La prima versione in marmo fu presentata a Brera nel 1856 e passò quasi inosservata.

Cinque anni dopo ottenne invece un enorme riscontro da parte del pubblico e della critica alla Prima Esposizione Nazionale di Firenze del 1861.

Ora dovete sapere che quando Magni proponeva il suo capolavoro a una mostra, ne cambiava alcuni particolari per adattarlo al contesto.

Quando la presentò a Firenze volle applicare fogli stampati al di sopra del libro in marmo, mostrando così la ragazza mentre leggeva due pagine dall’Arnaldo di Brescia di Giovan Battista Niccolini con al collo un medaglione con Garibaldi, per dare all’opera una connotazione patriottica.

La versione della Leggitrice che vi propongo nelle immagini è quella appartenente alla Galleria di Arte Moderna di Milano, confluita nelle raccolte civiche nel 1902 dalla Pinacoteca di Brera.

E’ quella che venne realizzata da Magni nel 1864 su commissione del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione.

L’opera è resa vivace e veritiera dalle ciocche di capelli che sfuggono dall’acconciatura e ricadono sulle spalle della giovane, dalle pieghe della veste che le scivola dalle spalle scoprendole un seno e da quell’aria completamente assorta.

La Leggitrice si trova in un ambiente domestico. Lo si può intuire dal suo abbigliamento e dai piedi nudi che le spuntano al di sotto della veste.

Without a doubt, the Reader is the best-known work by the sculptor Magni. The first marble version was presented in Brera in 1856 and went almost unnoticed.

Five years later he instead obtained an enormous response from the public and critics at the First National Exhibition in Florence in 1861.

Now you must know that when Magni presented his masterpiece at an exhibition, he changed some details to adapt it to the context.

When he presented it in Florence he wanted to apply printed sheets above the marble book, thus showing the girl reading two pages from Giovan Battista Niccolini’s Arnaldo di Brescia with a medallion with Garibaldi around her neck, to give the work a patriotic connotation .

The version of the Reader that I propose to you in the images is the one belonging to the Galleria di Arte Moderna in Milan, merged into the civic collections in 1902 from the Pinacoteca di Brera. It is the one that was built by Magni in 1864 on commission from the Ministry of Public Education.
