Il 3 maggio del 1820 nacque lo scultore Vincenzo Vela a Lingornetto, nel Canton Ticino. Per l’occasione vi racconto la storia di una delle sue più celebri sculture: la Preghiera del Mattino.

L’opera fu commissionata a Vincenzo Vela fra la fine del 1845 e l’inizio del 1846 da Giulio Litta Visconti Arese che voleva una bella scultura da collocare nel suo palazzo di Milano.

L’artista svizzero allora aveva ventisei anni ed era rinomato scultore seppur giovane. Aveva già scolpito il Vescovo Luvini e conquistato nel 1838 il primo premio a Venezia nel concorso per la realizzazione di un bassorilievo con Cristo che resuscita la figlia di Jairo.

Certo delle doti e dell’inventiva di Vela, il committente Litta lo lasciò libero di scegliere qualsiasi soggetto avesse desiderato scolpire nel marmo.

La Preghiera del Mattino fu per lui l’opera che gli diede la fama e lo confermò agli occhi del mondo come grande scultore. Presentò il capolavoro all’esposizione annuale dell’Accademia di Brera del 1846 e fu chiaro a tutti che quel giovane Vela era diventato uno dei più autorevoli esponenti della scuola naturalistica lombarda.

Il critico Carlo Tenca rimase affascinato dalla scultura tanto da parlarne come la “fanciulletta appena sorta dal letto, così come si trovasi, con la camiciuola che le cade alquanto da una spalla, s’inginocchia a fare la sua preghiera del mattino”, definendola come la più ardita novità che si fosse mai vista a quell’epoca.

Esiste un disegno preparatorio che mette in evidenza il modellato naturale delle varie forme, ritratte sicuramente dal vivo. Probabilmente Vela scelse come modella la futura moglie Sabina Dragoni, allora diciannovenne.

La Preghiera del Mattino è a grandezza naturale e raffigura una giovane fanciulla che sta pregando dopo essersi svegliata. E’ inginocchiata su un cuscino decorato con quattro nappe e ha la veste che le sta scivolando dalle spalle.

I capelli sono raccolti con una treccia fissata sul capo dalla quale sfugge una ciocca. Nella mano sinistra tiene probabilmente il Vangelo o comunque un libro sacro vista la croce che ha sulla copertina.

Tutta l’opera è permeata da un verismo quasi estremo. Guardandola a distanza ravvicinata si possono apprezzare dettagli incredibili come i punti di cucitura della veste.

La Preghiera del Mattino è stata restaurata qualche anno fa da Cinzia Parnigoni, la stessa professionista che si è occupata del restauro dei miei Prigioni fiorentini e del restauro del David.

Il capolavoro di Vela si trova a Milano, a Palazzo Morando.

Sculpture of the day: the Morning Prayer by Vincenzo Vela

On May 3, 1820, the sculptor Vincenzo Vela was born in Lingornetto, in the Canton of Ticino. For the occasion, I’ll tell you the story of one of his most famous sculptures: the Morning Prayer.

The work was commissioned to Vincenzo Vela between the end of 1845 and the beginning of 1846 by Giulio Litta Visconti Arese who wanted a beautiful sculpture to be placed in his palace in Milan.

The Swiss artist was then twenty-six years old and was a renowned sculptor albeit young. He had already sculpted Bishop Luvini and won first prize in Venice in 1838 in the competition for the creation of a bas-relief with Christ resurrecting Jairo’s daughter.

Sure of Vela’s talents and inventiveness, the client Litta left him free to choose any subject he wished to sculpt in marble.

The Morning Prayer was for him the work that gave him fame and confirmed him in the eyes of the world as a great sculptor. He presented the masterpiece at the annual exhibition of the Brera Academy in 1846 and it was clear to everyone that the young Vela had become one of the most authoritative exponents of the Lombard naturalistic school.

The critic Carlo Tenca was so fascinated by the sculpture that he spoke of it as the “little girl who has just risen from bed, as she is, with the blouse falling somewhat from one shoulder, kneels to say her morning prayer”, defining it as the most daring novelty ever seen at that time.

There is a preparatory drawing that highlights the natural modeling of the various shapes, certainly portrayed from life. Vela probably chose his future wife Sabina Dragoni, then nineteen, as a model.

The Morning Prayer is life-size and depicts a young girl who is praying after waking up. She is kneeling on a cushion decorated with four tassels and she has her robe slipping off her shoulders.

Her hair is gathered in a braid fixed on the head from which a strand escapes. In her left hand she probably holds the Gospel or in any case a sacred book given the cross she has on the cover.

The whole work is permeated by an almost extreme realism. Looking at her up close, you can appreciate incredible details such as the stitching on her dress.

The Morning Prayer was restored a few years ago by Cinzia Parnigoni, the same professional who took care of the restoration of my Florentine Prisoners and the restoration of the David.

Vela’s masterpiece can be found in Milan, at Palazzo Morando.
