Il 31 gennaio del 1504 fu celebrato a Firenze il matrimonio fra Agnolo Doni, appartenente a una ricchissima famiglia di mercanti di stoffe e Maddalena Strozzi, componente della famiglia di banchieri più importante della città, dopo i Medici.

Quel matrimonio, come tanti altri dell’epoca, fu per mero interesse. Agnolo Doni imparentandosi con la potente dinastia dei banchieri Strozzi, ambiva a far acquisire ancora più prestigio alla propria discendenza.

In vista dell’importante unione matrimoniale fu edificato alla fine del XV secolo il Palazzo Doni, nei pressi della Basilica di Santa Croce, fra il Corso Tintori e Via Magliabechi. L’edifico si sviluppa su tre piani e ha una superficie complessiva di 1700 metri quadrati e da non molto è stato comprato da un imprenditore sudamericano.

Dopo le nozze, i coniugi commissionarono a me la Sacra Famiglia, il celebre Tondo Doni. E’ molto più probabile che realizzai quel lavoro non in occasione del loro matrimonio ma successivamente, in concomitanza della nascita o del battesimo della tanto attesa figlia Maria.

Agnolo Doni provò a fare il furbo con me. Avrebbe voluto pagarmi l’opera a una cifra assai inferiore rispetto a quella pattuita. Feci riportare a casa mia quel lavoro dal garzone che glie l’aveva consegnato e gli mandai a dire che se ancora ci teneva ad averla, avrebbe dovuto pagarla il doppio stabilito.

Il Doni tornò a capo chino e senza proferir parola comprò la Sacra Famiglia pagandola il doppio.

Altra opera celebre commissionata dai Doni fu il doppio ritratto affidato a Raffaello, oggi appartenenti alla Galleria degli Uffizi. Agnolo e Maddalena furono immortalati dall’artista di tre quarti e a mezzo busto. Hanno lo sguardo fisso sullo spettatore e sullo sfondo dei due dipinti si intravedono una serie di colline.

Osservando bene il ritratto di Agnolo Doni, si intuisce che si trova sopra una terrazza della quale è possibile percepire la presenza della balaustra sulla quale appoggia il braccio in vista. Ha lineamenti duri, un naso abbastanza pronunciato e le labbra chiuse.

Raffaello, che voleva sottolineare lo status dei due personaggi, pose particolare attenzione nella resa materica del velluto del corsetto e del cappello indossato dal Doni e ai tessuti sfoggiati da Maddalena Strozzi come il broccato blu dell’avito e il raso rosso del corsetto, arricchendo la figura con preziosi gioielli, simbolo del suo status sociale.

January 31, 1504: the wedding of Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi

On January 31, 1504, the marriage between Agnolo Doni, belonging to a very wealthy family of cloth merchants, and Maddalena Strozzi, a member of the second most important family in the city, after the Medici, was celebrated in Florence.

That marriage, like so many others of the time, was for mere interest. Agnolo Doni intermarrying with the powerful Strozzi banker dynasty, aspired to make his descendants acquire even more prestige.

In view of the important marriage union, Palazzo Doni was built at the end of the 15th century, near the Basilica of Santa Croce, between Corso Tintori and Via Magliabechi. The building is spread over three floors and has a total area of 1700 square meters and was recently bought by a South American entrepreneur.

After the wedding, the spouses commissioned me the Holy Family, the famous Tondo Doni. It is much more probable that I did that work not on the occasion of their wedding but later, in conjunction with the birth or baptism of their long-awaited daughter Maria.

Agnolo Doni tried to play smart with me. He would have liked to pay me for the work at a much lower amount than the agreed one. I had the boy who had given it to him bring that work back to my house and sent word to him that if he still wanted to have it, he would have to pay it double the established amount. Doni returned with his head bowed and without saying a word he bought the Holy Family, paying double the price.

Another famous work commissioned by the Doni was the double portrait entrusted to Raphael, now belonging to the Uffizi Gallery. Agnolo and Maddalena were immortalized by the artist in three-quarter and half-length views. They have their gaze fixed on the viewer and in the background of the two paintings a series of hills can be glimpsed.

Looking closely at the portrait of Agnolo Doni, one can sense that it is located on a terrace of which it is possible to perceive the presence of the balustrade on which the visible arm rests. He has hard features, a fairly pronounced nose and closed lips.

Raphael, who wanted to underline the status of the two characters, paid particular attention to the material rendering of the velvet of the corset and hat worn by Doni and to the fabrics worn by Maddalena Strozzi such as the blue brocade of the ancestry and the red satin of the corset, enriching the figure with precious jewels, symbol of his social status.
