Grudging appreciation among artists
Francesco Francia was a highly regarded Bolognese painter in his hometown. He was born in the second half of the fifteenth century and thought he was a great artist. Certainly he didn’t paint badly but someone who knew how to do things better than him was all right. Vasari narrates that when Raphael’s Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia arrived in the city as a papal gift, he attached his art to the nail and never painted anything.
One day, while I was busy finishing the huge bronze sculpture of Julius II, he came to see me. “The material is very beautiful,” he told me, referring to the bronze. “If this is a beautiful matter I must be grateful to Pope Julius who gave it to me, as you must be grateful to those who give you the colors” I replied without blinking.
No, diplomacy has never been my strong point. Your Michelangelo Buonarroti
