La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è L’Esiliato dello scultore portoghese António Soares dos Reis, noto anche con il nome originale di O Desterrado.

L’artista iniziò a mettere mano all’opera nel 1872 a Roma, come prova finale del pensionato di scultura e poi la terminò di scolpire a Porto.

L’Esiliato fu l’opera maestra dell’artista che la propose alla quattordicesima mostra triennale dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Porto e gli fece successivamente conquistare la medaglia d’oro all’Esposizione Internazionale del 1881 a Madrid.

Soares dos Reis molto probabilmente si ispirò alla Disperazione scolpita dall’artista francese Jean Joseph Perraud qualche anno prima, nel 1861.

Sebbene le due opere abbiano pose non identiche, sono molto simili ed è del tutto sovrapponibile il significato dei due lavori. Le mani intrecciati ricorrono in entrambe le sculture così come l’atteggiamento dimesso a capo chino.

L’intensità dell‘Esiliato di Soares dos Reis è espressa dal contrasto tangibile fra il dinamismo della figura articolata su due assi incrociati obliqui e lo sguardo rivolto verso terra.

E’ percettibile il dolore provato per la terra natìa del protagonista dell’opera, oramai lontana e non più raggiungibile.

Le mani giunte, le labbra contratte e il piede appoggiato sulla gamba sono evidenti segni della sua inquietudine interiore.

O Desterrado o L’Esiliato che dir si voglia è l’opera più nota del Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, fondato nel 1833 quando D. Pedro IV volle creare nella città di Porto un museo che ospitasse stampe e dipinti.

Il museo è ubicato all’interno in un palazzo neoclassico del Settecento e custodisce preziose opere di Silva Porto, Marques de Oliveira, Artur Loureiro e Henrique Pousão ma non solo.

Come avrete notato, il museo ha il nome dello scultore di cui vi sto parlando perché all’interno delle sue sale non solo potrete ammirare L’Esiliato ma anche molte altre opere dello scultore più noto del Portogallo.

La scultura O Desterrado è stata sottoposta nella primavera del 2021 a un attento intervento di restauro, condotto dalla restauratrice Maria Ines Sardinha Gomes.

Sculpture of the day: the Exile by Soares dos Reis

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is The Exiled by the Portuguese sculptor António Soares dos Reis, also known by the original name of O Desterrado.

The artist began to put his hand to the work in 1872 in Rome, as a final test of the sculpture pensioner and then finished sculpting it in Porto.

The Exiled was the master work of the artist who proposed it at the fourteenth triennial exhibition of the Academy of Fine Arts in Porto and subsequently won him the gold medal at the 1881 International Exhibition in Madrid.

Soares dos Reis was most likely inspired by the Desperation sculpted by the French artist Jean Joseph Perraud a few years earlier, in 1861.

Although the two works have non-identical poses, they are very similar and the meaning of the two works is completely overlapping. The intertwined hands recur in both sculptures as well as the resigned attitude with bowed head.

The intensity of Soares dos Reis’ Exiled is expressed by the tangible contrast between the dynamism of the figure articulated on two oblique crossed axes and the gaze towards the ground.

The pain felt for the homeland of the protagonist of the work is perceptible, now far away and no longer reachable.

The joined hands, the pursed lips and the foot resting on the leg are evident signs of his inner restlessness.

O Desterrado or L’Esiliato if you prefer is the best known work of the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, it was founded in 1833 when D. Pedro IV wanted to found a museum in the city of Porto that housed prints and paintings.

It is located inside an eighteenth-century neoclassical building and houses precious works by Silva Porto, Marques de Oliveira, Artur Loureiro and Henrique Pousão but not only.
