La mano della Pietà Vaticana e il temerario rifacimento
La potenza espressiva di ogni singolo dettaglio della Pietà Vaticana arriva dritta all’anima, sconvolge i sensi e mette in moto i pensieri.
Quella mano della Vergine che pare domandare al mondo intero “Cosa avete fatto?” e al contempo pare offrire il corpo del Figlio per a salvezza dell’umanità intera non lascia mai indifferenti. Eppure proprio quella mano non è più originale mia. Sedetevi comodi che vi racconto anche questa storia.
Sebbene il restauro più celebre a cui sia stata sottoposta l’opera a seguito dell’attentato del 21 maggio 1972 sia noto a tutti, meno noto è un intervento assai precedente.
Nel corso di uno spostamento della Pietà Vaticana eseguito nel Settecento all’interno dell Basilica di San Pietro, subì un danno non da poco. A causa di un urto accidentale, quattro dita della mano sinistra si staccarono di netto dal palmo.
Provate solo per un istante a immaginarvi quella mano così deturpata, con un solo dito.
La Pietà Vaticana rimase menomata per qualche anno fino a quando, nel 1736, lo scultore Giuseppe Lironi fu incaricato di ripristinare le dita perdute.
Fin qui non ci sarebbe niente di strano sennonché Lironi si prese un po’ troppe libertà in quel restauro. Al tempo fu molto contestato perché le dita, dopo il suo intervento, non erano più nella posizione che io avevo pensato.
A distanza di secoli è difficile comprendere e rintracciare qualche documento che descriva com’era prima dell’incidente la mano della Vergine per poter paragonarla a quella di adesso, dopo l’intervento del Lironi.

The expressive power of every single detail of the Vatican Pietà reaches straight to the soul, shocks the senses and sets thoughts in motion.
That hand of the Virgin that seems to ask the whole world “What have you done?” and at the same time it seems to offer the body of the Son for the salvation of all humanity never leaves anyone indifferent. Yet that very hand is no longer original to me. Sit back and I’ll tell you this story too.
Although the most famous restoration to which the work was subjected following the attack of 21 May 1972 is known to all, a much earlier intervention is less well known.
During a move of the Vatican Pietà carried out in the eighteenth century inside St. Peter’s Basilica, it suffered considerable damage. Due to an accidental impact, four fingers of the left hand separated cleanly from the palm. Just for a moment try to imagine that hand so disfigured, with only one finger.
The Vatican Pietà remained crippled for a few years until, in 1736, the sculptor Giuseppe Lironi was commissioned to restore the lost fingers.
So far there would be nothing strange except that Lironi took a little too much liberties in that restoration. At the time it was much disputed because his fingers, after his intervention, were no longer in the position I had thought.
Centuries later, it is difficult to understand and trace any document that describes what the Virgin’s hand was like before the accident in order to be able to compare it to that of now, after Lironi’s intervention.
