Influenze e disprezzo: Cosimo I de’ Medici scomparso dalla biografia del Condivi
Nella biografia che il Condivi scrisse per raccontare la mia vita, vengono citati un gran numero di persone che ebbero in qualche modo a che fare con me.
Un po’ tutto il testo è ricco di personaggi più o meno influenti con i quali ebbi rapporti. Ci sono individui citati in modo benevolo e altri con uno sguardo più severo, persone allora riconosciute come autorevoli e altre caduti in disgrazia che il solo fatto di citarle poteva causarmi problemi di non poco conto.
Avete mai fatto caso però che viene completamente trascurato il mio rapporto con Cosimo I de’ Medici, primo Granduca di Toscana? Non è una dimenticanza, tutt’altro.
Condivi sapeva quanto l’avessi a schifo e forse fui proprio io a suggerirgli di ignorarlo. Sicuramente lui avrebbe voluto comparire in quello scritto visto quanto ci teneva a riuscire a ottenere servigi miei oppure opere di qualsiasi tipo che avessi plasmato.
Disprezzavo profondamente la sua politica e, probabilmente, se Firenze fosse stata guidata da un altro reggente, sarei tornato in terra natìa prima di passare a miglior vita. Invece mai volli incontrare Cosimo I che usava il mio nome solo per rendere grande sé stesso, come se in quello che feci in vita fosse in qualche misura merito suo.
Non è un caso nemmeno che nella biografia del Condivi viene riservato ampio spazio a Niccolò Ridolfi, esule fiorentino repubblicano che a Roma aveva trovato rifugio.
Cardinale nemico giurato di Cosimo I che poi fu assassinato durante il conclave che si svolse fra il 1549 e il 1550 quando stava ottenendo ottimi risultati, a un passo all’elezione sul soglio di San Pietro. Proprio il suo assassinio probabilmente fu ordinato dallo stesso Cosimo I.

In the biography that Condivi tells about my life, a large number of people who had something to do with me are mentioned.
The entire text is full of more or less influential characters with whom I had relationships. There are people cited in a benevolent way and others less so, individuals recognized at the time as authoritative and others who have fallen into disgrace and whose mere citation could cause me problems.
Have you ever noticed, however, that my relationship with Cosimo I de’ Medici is completely overlooked? It’s not an oversight, far from it.
Condivi knew how much I disliked him and perhaps it was I who suggested that he ignore it. He certainly would have wanted to appear in that writing given how much he wanted to obtain my services or works of any kind created by me.
I deeply despised his policies and probably if Florence had been led by another regent, I would have returned to my native land before passing on to a better life. Instead, I never wanted to meet Cosimo I who only wanted to use my name to make himself great, as if he had contributed in some way to what I did in life to take credit for it.
It is also no coincidence that in Condivi’s biography ample space is reserved for Niccolò Ridolfi, a Florentine republican exile who had found refuge in Rome. Cardinal sworn enemy of Cosimo I who was then assassinated during the conclave which took place between 1549 and 1550 when he was obtaining excellent results and perhaps would have been elected pope. His assassination was probably ordered by Cosimo I himself.
