The study for San Bartolomeo

The drawing I propose to you today is the study I made before frescoing the San Bartolomeo: the figure in the Last Judgment who holds the knife in one hand and his own skin in the other in which my features have been recognised.

I traced the naked figure in a frontal position with black charcoal, without drawing either the head or the lower part of the right leg.

The study seems not to be done from life, on a model posed, but rather seems to be taken from an ancient sculpture.

Wilde, regarding this drawing, wrote that “The complex stretching and twisting of the body, so characteristic of Michelangelo’s figurative style in the early 1530s, were abandoned in the figure as executed, and the action of the arms was correspondingly modified”.

Tolnay did not connect this study to San Bartolomeo but according to him it was much closer in style to the drawings for the sculptures for the New Sacristy made between 1530 and 1534, with those flexible forms that outline the body.

The drawing belongs to the British Museum and will be present in the exhibition which will open shortly in the museum of the same name entitled “Michelangelo the last decades”

For the moment, your always Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you and will meet you in the next posts and on social media
