“Neoclassico e Romantico. Pompeo Marchesi, scultore e collezionista” è la nuova mostra che aprirà al pubblico a partire dal 1 marzo 2023 alle Gallerie di Arte Moderna a Milano.

È la prima mostra monografica dedicata allo scultore Pompeo Marchesi, grande scultore ottocentesco allievo di Antonio Canova e amico nonché coetaneo di Francesco Hayez. Saranno oltre 100 i pezzi esposti, confluiti nelle raccolte civiche d’arte del comune di Milano proprio grazie a un legato dell’artista.

Fra le opere presenti ci saranno soprattutto bozzetti e i modelli originali in gesso realizzati dal Marchesi come ad esempio quello della bellissima Maddalena, formato fra il 1826 e il 1831.

Pompeo Marchesi con le sue opere segnò il passaggio dal Neoclassicismo al Romanticismo in una Milano che visse fra l’Impero Napoleonico e il momento della Restaurazione.

Il 2023 è l’anno in cui si celebrano i 240 anni dalla nascita di Marchesi, venuto al mondo a Milano proprio il 7 agosto del 1783. L’artista ebbe un ruolo fondamentale come collezionista tanto che fu proprio lui, con il proprio lascito testamentario, a far confluire il prezioso modello in gesso di Ebe del Canova alla Galleria d’Arte Moderna, uno dei pochissimi modelli originali non appartenenti alla ricchissima Gypsoteca di Possagno.

Pompeo Marchesi studiò scultura all’Accademia di Brera sotto l’attenta guida di Giuseppe Bossi e poi andò a Roma dove ebbe modo di perfezionarsi sotto la guida di Canova.

Marchesi è strettamente è legato a doppia mandata alla città di Milano. È lì infatti che ottenne grande successo e partecipò ai grandi cantieri cittadini quali il Duomo e l’Arco della Pace nelle vesti di professore dell’Accademia di Brera.

Stendhal definì l’artista come il Fidia meneghino nel suo celebre romanzo La Certosa di Parma. Marchesi ricevette commissioni importanti da tutta Europa e fu quello il momento in cui a scultura lombarda arrivò all’apice dello splendore.

Il suo atelier divorato dalle fiamme fu ricostruito grazie a una colletta fatta dai cittadini milanesi e volle inaugurarlo di persona l’imperatore d’Austria Ferdinando I. Il nuovo laboratorio era uno dei punti focali della città, frequentato da scrittori, nobili, artisti e personaggi di spicco dell’epoca. Hayez addirittura lo aveva affrescato per renderlo ancora più bello e sia Balzac che Stendhal o ricordano nei loro scritti.

Fu all’interno della nuova sala che Marchesi volle raccogliere tutti i bozzetti e i modelli delle proprie opere, affiancandoli alla ricca collezione che aveva raccolto nel corso degli anni. Nel suo testamento destinò tutto ciò che era presente nel suo studio non ai musei che già erano presenti a Milano ma alla città che all’epoca non possedeva alcuna collezione d’arte.

Marchesi fece da apripista ad altri artisti che nei decenni a seguire seguiranno il suo esempio andando a creare le collezioni artistiche civiche di Milano.

Il lascito di Pompeo Marchesi includeva tanti suoi modelli, disegni e bozzetti ma anche sculture antiche, incisioni, disegni, libri, incisioni e dipinti sia datati che di artisti a lui contemporanei come Francesco Hayez, Thorvaldsen, Appiani, Bossi e Antonio Canova.

All’inizio questa grande raccolta venne esposta in quella che fu la prima sede del Museo Artistico Municipale ai Giardini Pubblici e successivamente le opere di Marchesi furono suddivise fra i diversi istituti che poco a poco venivano aperti.

Oggi il maggior numero delle opere del lascito si trovano presso la Galleria d’Arte Moderna che deve proprio il nucleo fondativo alla donazione di Pompeo Marchesi.

La mostra “Neoclassico e Romantico. Pompeo Marchesi, scultore e collezionista” che aprirà a partire dal 1 marzo fino al 18 giugno 2023 presso la Galleria di Arte Moderna di Milano, ricostruirà la raccolta donata dall’artista per mettere in luce la sua importanza per la nascita delle collezioni cittadine.

Verranno esposte opere provenienti dal Gabinetto dei Disegni, dalla Raccolta delle Stampe Achille Bertarelli, dalla Biblioteca d’Arte, dal Civico Archivio Fotografico e dal Museo d’Arte Antica del Castello Sforzesco.

L’esposizione sarà anche l’occasione per poter vedere i risultati della campagna di restauri condotta sulle sculture, le terrecotte e i bozzetti di Pompeo Marchesi. Fra le opere restaurate vale la pena menzionare la Maddalena, le terrecotte per l’Arco della Pace e il Genio della Caccia.

“Neoclassical and Romantic. Pompeo Marchesi, sculptor and collector” is the new exhibition that will open to the public from 1 March 2023 at the Gallerie di Arte Moderna in Milan.

It is the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the sculptor Pompeo Marchesi, a great nineteenth-century sculptor who was a pupil of Antonio Canova and a friend and contemporary of Francesco Hayez. There will be over 100 exhibited pieces, merged into the civic art collections of the municipality of Milan thanks to a legacy of the artist.

Among the works present there will above all be sketches and original plaster models made by Marchesi such as that of the beautiful Magdalene, created between 1826 and 1831.

Pompeo Marchesi with his works marked the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism in a Milan that lived between the Napoleonic Empire and the moment of the Restoration.

2023 is the year in which the 240th anniversary of the birth of Marchesi is celebrated, who came into the world in Milan on 7 August 1783. The artist played a fundamental role as a collector so much so that it was he, with his own testamentary bequest , to bring together the precious plaster model of Ebe del Canova to the Gallery of Modern Art, one of the very few original models not belonging to the very rich Gypsoteca of Possagno.

Pompeo Marchesi studied sculpture at the Brera Academy under the careful guidance of Giuseppe Bossi and then went to Rome where he was able to perfect himself under the guidance of Canova.

Marchesi is closely linked to the city of Milan. In fact, it was there that he achieved great success and participated in major city construction sites such as the Duomo and the Arco della Pace as a professor of the Brera Academy.

Stendhal defined the artist as the Milanese Phidias in his famous novel La Certosa di Parma. Marchesi received important commissions from all over Europe and that was the moment in which Lombard sculpture reached the peak of its splendour.

His atelier devoured by flames was rebuilt thanks to a collection made by the citizens of Milan and the emperor of Austria Ferdinand I wanted to inaugurate it in person. The new laboratory was one of the focal points of the city, frequented by writers, nobles, artists and personalities prominent of the time. Hayez had even frescoed it to make it even more beautiful and both Balzac and Stendhal remember it in their writings.

It was inside the new room that Marchesi wanted to collect all the sketches and models of his works, adding them to the rich collection that he had collected over the years. In his will, he destined everything that was present in his studio not to the museums that were already present in Milan but to the city which at the time did not possess any art collection.

Marchesi paved the way for other artists who in the following decades would follow his example by creating the civic art collections of Milan.

Pompeo Marchesi’s legacy included many of his models, drawings and sketches but also ancient sculptures, engravings, drawings, books, engravings and paintings both dated and by contemporary artists such as Francesco Hayez, Thorvaldsen, Appiani, Bossi and Antonio Canova.

At the beginning this large collection was exhibited in what was the first site of the Municipal Artistic Museum in the Public Gardens and subsequently the works of Marchesi were divided among the various institutes that were gradually opened.

Today the largest number of the works of the legacy are found in the Gallery of Modern Art which owes its founding nucleus to the donation of Pompeo Marchesi.

The exhibition “Neoclassical and Romantic. Pompeo Marchesi, sculptor and collector” which will open from March 1st to June 18th 2023 at the Galleria di Arte Moderna in Milan, will reconstruct the collection donated by the artist to highlight his importance for the birth of the city’s collections.

For the occasion, works from the Cabinet of Drawings, the Achille Bertarelli Print Collection, the Art Library, the Civic Photographic Archive and the Museum of Ancient Art of the Castello Sforzesco will be exhibited.

The exhibition will also be an opportunity to see the results of the restoration campaign carried out on Pompeo Marchesi’s sculptures, terracottas and sketches. Among the restored works it is worth mentioning the Magdalene, the terracottas for the Arco della Pace and the Genio della Caccia.
