La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Amore e Psiche scolpita da Cesare Lapini tra il 1890 e il 1900, a Firenze.

È un’opera in marmo che sembra librarsi nell’aria, a metà tra l’etereo e il sensuale. Lapini era noto proprio per saper ideare soggetti allegorici e di genere ispirati all’antico, speso femminili e accattivanti.

Forme seducenti e delicate erano le caratteristiche che lo resero popolare tra la clientela americana dell’epoca.

Nato a Firenze nel 1848, Lapini divenne uno scultore particolarmente amato oltre oceano. Tra le opere più note vale la pena ricordare il Primo Bacio con i due giovani che si scambiano tenere effusioni, la Pudicizia scolpita come una più moderna Venere Pudica e la Sorpresa.

Osservando con attenzione il gruppo di Amore e Psiche che raffigura i protagonisti della nota favola narrata da Apuleio, non si può fare a meno di vedere una qualità del modellato diversa a seconda del punto preso in considerazione.

Mentre le ali di Amore sono caratterizzate da una buona resa così come lo sono le mani levate verso l’alto che si sfiorano, i volti, i capelli ma anche i panneggi che coprono parzialmente i due amanti sono stati scolpiti in modo sommario e poco curato.

Chissà, forse questa scelta per motivi di tempo dettati dal fatto di dover consegnare al più presto la commissione o per l’incombenza di molti altri lavori da condurre a buon punto.

Insomma, mentre alcune zone dell’opera sembrano assai dettagliate, altre lo sono meno.

L’opera, alta 1,47 metri senza piedistallo, è stata firmata dall’artista sul retro della base con la dicitura GALL: LAPINI / FIRENZE e oggi appartiene a una collezione privata.

Sculpture of the day: Cupid and Psyche by Cesare Lapini

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Cupid and Psyche sculpted by Cesare Lapini between 1890 and 1900, in Florence.

A marble work that seems to hover in the air, halfway between the ethereal and the sensual. Lapini was known for being able to create allegorical and genre subjects inspired by the ancient, often feminine and captivating.

Seductive and delicate forms were a characteristic of his that made him popular among the American clientele of the time.

Born in Florence in 1848, Lapini became a particularly beloved sculptor overseas. Among his most famous works it is worth mentioning the First Kiss with the two young people exchanging tender effusions, the Modesty sculpted as a more modern Venus Pudica and the Surprise.

Looking carefully at the group of Cupid and Psyche that depicts the protagonists of the famous fable narrated by Apuleius, one cannot help but see a different quality of modeling depending on the point taken into consideration.

While Cupid’s wings are characterized by a good rendering as are the hands raised upwards that touch each other, the faces, the hair but also the draperies that partially cover the two lovers have been sculpted in a summary and careless way.

Who knows, perhaps this choice was for time reasons dictated by the fact of having to deliver the commission as soon as possible or by the burden of many other works to be carried out to a good point.

In short, while some areas of the work seem very detailed, others are less so.

The work, 1.47 meters high without a pedestal, was signed by the artist on the back of the base with the wording GALL: LAPINI / FIRENZE and today belongs to a private collection.
