Sapete che i medaglioni bronzei presenti nella volta della Sistina li dipinsi a secco?

Ebbene si, quei grandi tondi posizionati fra un ignudo e l’altro, al di sotto dei riquadri più piccoli con le scene bibliche, non volli dipingerli a buon fresco per una ragione ben precisa.

Stesi solamente la base bruna in affresco e poi scelsi di dipingerli a secco per poter successivamente applicare la foglia d’oro che richiede necessariamente una stesura non a buon fresco.

“…(gli ignudi) sedendo e girando e sostenendo alcuni festoni di foglie di quercia e di ghiande, messe per l’arme e per l’impresa di Papa Giulio , denotando che a quel tempo et al governo suo era l’età dell’oro, per non essere allora l’Italia ne’ travagli e nelle miserie che ella è stata poi. E così in mezzo di loro tengono alcune medaglie, dentrovi storie in bozza, contraffatte di bronzo ed oro, cavate dal Libro de’ Re. “

Il Vasari nelle Vite

Dipinsi le storie dei medaglioni su disegni preparatori che tracciati direttamente sull’intonaco, delineati in modo dettagliato. Non è da escludere che sui medaglioni ci possa essere la mano di qualche aiuto.

I medaglioni sono dieci ma ne istoriai solo nove.

Sapete quali storie raffigurai? Storie tratte dall’Antico Testamento che lo Steinmann, qualche annetto fa, è riuscito a identificare una ad una.

Nel primo medaglione compare l’uccisione di Abner da parte di Ioab per proseguire poi con la Morte di Uria. Nel successivo medaglione raffigurai Davide che si inginocchia davanti al profeta Natan mentre nel quarto raccontai figuratamente la Morte di Assalone.

Proseguii con il Sacrificio di Isacco e la Morte di Ioram sbalzato dal carro.

Successivamente si può identificare la Distruzione del tempio di Baal ordinata da Ieu e il medaglione con lo sterminio della Stirpe di Acab da parte di Ieu.

Nell’ultimo medaglione rappresentai la Salita al cielo di Elia, raccontata nel libro dei Re.

Dry painted medallions and their meaning

Did you know that I painted dry the bronze medallions in the vault of the Sistine Chapel?

Well yes, those large tondos positioned between one nude and another, below the panels with the biblical scenes, I did not want to paint them in fresco for a very specific reason.

I only spread the brown base in fresco and then I chose to paint them dry in order to subsequently apply the gold leaf which necessarily requires a non-buon fresco spreading.

I painted the stories of the medallions on preparatory drawings that I traced directly onto the plaster, outlined in detail. It cannot be ruled out that there may be some helping hand on the medallions.

There are ten medallions but I only decorated nine.

Do you know which stories I depicted? Stories taken from the Old Testament that Steinmann, a few years ago, managed to identify one by one.

In the first medallion appears the killing of Abner by Joab to continue with the Death of Uriah. In the next medallion I depicted David kneeling before the prophet Nathan while in the fourth I figuratively recounted the Death of Assalone. I continued with the Sacrifice of Isaac and the Death of Joram thrown from the chariot.

Subsequently we can identify the Destruction of the temple of Baal ordered by Jehu and the medallion with Jehu’s extermination of the Seed of Ahab. In the last medallion I represented Elijah’s ascent to heaven, told in the book of Kings.
