In questi giorni è stato pubblicato sul The Wall Street Journal la notizia relativa a un possibile mio autoritratto nella volta della Sistina, ipotesi lanciata da uno storico dell’arte italiano che lavora negli Usa.

Una supposizione che può risultare affascinante ma che a mio avviso ha poco di concreto su cui sostenersi. Adriano Marinazzo, lo storico dell’arte che al momento lavora presso il Muscarelle Museum of Art in Virginia, ha dichiarato che nel riquadro della Creazione di Adamo, mi sarei affrescato nelle vesti di Dio che sta per dare la vita al primo uomo del mondo.

“Michelangelo si considerava il Messia dell’arte, quindi ha un senso” ha dichiarato Marinazzo. Beh, diciamo che l’affermazione è perlomeno stravagante.

Stando a quando da lui riferito, sarebbe arrivato a questa “scoperta” dopo aver analizzato il celebre sonetto che scrissi a Giovanni da Pistoia in cui descrivevo le condizioni in cui stavo lavorando agli affreschi della volta. Il disegno a lato che mi vede intento a dipingere la volta assai stilizzato a sua detta sarebbe simile alla raffigurazione di Dio nella Creazione di Adamo.

A me pare ci voglia molta ma molta fantasia nel vedere in un disegno ironico e sommario un me che affresca proprio quel riquadro. Se così fosse poi, quale relazione avrebbe con un eventuale autoritratto?

Lo storico dell’arte afferma che l’autoritratto che mi vede nei panni di Dio creatore sarebbe molto idealizzato e che quindi non avrei riprodotto il mio naso rotto, da pugile.

C’è un altro fatto però che pare non venga considerato da chi ha lanciato questa ipotesi. Iniziai a metter mano alla volta quando avevo 33 anni e la portai a termine quando ne avevo 37.

Vi pare possa essere quello l’aspetto di un uomo che ancora non ha compiuto quarant’anni?

Provate a osservare un mio qualsiasi ritratto o busto, magari realizzato da chi mi conobbe molto bene come Daniele da Volterra e paragonatelo con il Dio della Creazione. Quale attinenza avrebbero due immagini così diverse?

Il Condivi mise nero su bianco una descrizione del mio aspetto molto dettagliata e vi assicuro che non aveva nulla a che fare con quell’uomo. Ve la riporto a seguire:

“Il volto è triangolare: le tempie sporgenti più degli orecchi e gli orecchi più delle guance. La fronte è quadrata, il naso un po’ schiacciato, non per natura ma perchè da bambino un tale Torrigiano de’ Torrigiani, uomo violento e manesco, quasi gli staccò la cartilagine del naso con un pugno, e Michelangelo fu portato a casa mezzo morto.

Le labbra sono sottili, ma l’inferiore sporge un po’: basta guardarlo di profilo. Il mento è ben fatto e proporzionato. La fronte sporge quasi quanto il naso, le ciglia sono rade, gli occhi piccoletti, con macchioline gialle e azzurre nell’iride, le orecchie giuste, i capelli e la barba neri.”

Mi pare che le prove fornite per sostenere quest’azzardata tesi siano più che labili e del tutto inattendibili. Di teorie se ne possono fare quante se ne vuole ma poi devono essere avvalorate da elementi più sostanziosi.

Discovered my new self-portrait? My thoughts on it

In recent days the news relating to a possible self-portrait of me in the vault of the Sistine Chapel has been published in The Wall Street Journal, a hypothesis launched by an Italian art historian who works in the USA.

An assumption that may be fascinating but which in my opinion has little concrete basis on which to support. Adriano Marinazzo, the art historian who currently works at the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Virginia, declared that in the panel of the Creation of Adam, I would have frescoed myself in the guise of God who is about to give life to the first man in the world.

“Michelangelo considered himself the Messiah of art, so he makes sense,” said Marinazzo. Well, let’s say that the claim is at the very least extravagant.

According to what he reported, he arrived at this “discovery” after analyzing the famous sonnet I wrote to Giovanni da Pistoia in which I described the conditions in which I was working on the frescoes in the vault. According to him, the drawing on the side that shows me intent on painting the highly stylized vault would be similar to the representation of God in the Creation of Adam.

It seems to me that it takes a lot, a lot of imagination to see in an ironic and summary drawing a me frescoing that very square. If so, what relationship would it have with a possible self-portrait?

The art historian states that the self-portrait that he sees of me as God the creator would be highly idealized and that therefore I would not have reproduced my broken nose, as a boxer.

There is another fact, however, which does not seem to be considered by whoever launched this hypothesis. I started taking it from side to side when I was 33 and finished it when I was 37.

Do you think that could be what a man who has not yet turned forty looks like?

Try to observe any portrait or bust of mine, perhaps made by someone who knew me very well like Daniele da Volterra and compare it with the God of Creation. What relevance would two such different images have?

Condivi wrote a very detailed description of my appearance on paper and I assure you that it had nothing to do with that man. I report it to you below:

It seems to me that the evidence provided to support this risky thesis is more than weak and completely unreliable. You can make as many theories as you want but then they must be supported by more substantial elements.
