Ambrogio Figino venne al mondo in quel di Milano nel 1553, quando oramai io ero sulla via del tramonto. A lungo studiò le figure dei mio Giudizio Universale e ne trasse ispirazione per i dipinti che ebbe modo di realizzare negli anni a seguire.

Amava le mie pitture e pure i lavori che feci di scultura, tanto da analizzarne accanitamente e con tanta dedizione le fattezze.

Sul finire degli anni Ottanta del Cinquecento ebbe modo di viaggiare fino a Roma e osservare da vicino opere di arte antica e il Giudizio Universale, affrescato da poco più di un lustro.

Rimase tanto affascinato da quel lavoro che volle dedicarsi alla riproduzione di molte di quelle figure circondate dal blu lapislazzuli.

Scartabellando fra la sua produzione grafica di quell’epoca ci sono numerosi disegni mirabili come l’angelo con il drappo verde al centro del gruppo degli angeli apteri che suonano le trombe.

Presso la Galleria dell’Accademia di Venezia è conservato un altro suo disegno a matita nera lumeggiata a gessetto bianco su carta azzurra, sempre relativo a un altro angelo tubicino.

Assai ben fatta è anche la figura che riprende l’uomo presente nel gruppo di giudicati a sinistra che si elevano verso il cielo.

Gli studi fatti da Ambrogio Figino sul Giudizio ebbero un grande impatto sulla sua produzione artistica tanto che è possibile distinguere nettamente le opere che realizzò prima di vedere il mio capolavoro e quelle che fece negli anni a seguire.

Figino’s studies on the Last Judgment

Ambrogio Figino was born in Milan in 1553, by which time I was on the way to sunset. He studied the figures of my Last Judgment for a long time and drew inspiration from them for the paintings that he was able to create in the following years.

He loved my paintings and also the sculptures I made, so much so that he analyzed their features fiercely and with such dedication.

At the end of the eighties of the sixteenth century he was able to travel to Rome and closely observe works of ancient art and the Last Judgment, frescoed for just over five years.

He was so fascinated by that work that he wanted to devote himself to reproducing many of those figures surrounded by lapis lazuli blue.

Leafing through his graphic production of that era, there are numerous admirable drawings such as the angel with the green drape in the center of the group of apterous angels playing trumpets.

Another drawing by him in black pencil highlighted in white chalk on blue paper is kept in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Venice, again relating to another tube angel.

The figure that takes up the man present in the group of judges on the left who rise towards the sky is also very well done.

The studies made by Ambrogio Figino on Judgment had a great impact on his artistic production so much that it is possible to clearly distinguish the works he created before seeing my masterpiece and those he did in the following years.
