Il 10 ottobre del 1813 nacque a Roncole di Busseto, in provincia di Parma, Giuseppe Verdi, uno dei massimi compositori d’opera e simbolo del Risorgimento italiano. 

Giovanni Boldini volle rendere omaggio all’amico musicista realizzando per lui, nel 1886, un mirabile ritratto a pastello, oggi appartenente alla Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma.

Osservando quel vibrante ritratto a pastello che sembra penetrare con lo sguardo lo spettatore, entrandogli nell’animo, rende giustizia al carattere del compositore con quegli echi del Rigoletto, dell’Aida e de La Traviata che sembrano fare da sottofondo.

Boldini ritrasse Verdi in sole due ore, in posizione frontale, a mezzobusto. Indossa il suo paltò del quale non sapeva fare a meno, sciarpa di seta al collo e il cilindro nero appoggiato sul capo. Il Maestro stesso rimase meravigliato dal realismo dell’opera, alla stregua dello stesso artista.

Proprio così, Boldini si compiacque talmente tanto di quel ritratto che volle custodirlo per il resto della propria esistenza, considerandolo come una delle sue migliori opere. Nemmeno volle vendere il ritratto di Verdi al principe del Galles che sarebbe stato disposto a pagarlo fior di quattrini.

Dovete sapere che l’artista aveva realizzato un primo ritratto dipinto a olio. Nella primavera del 1886, Verdi si recò presso l’atelier dell’artista, al numero 11 di Place Pigalle per la prima seduta di posa, assieme alla moglie Giuseppina Strepponi e con l’assistente Muzio.

Fu quella una seduta movimentata: Verdi nervoso perché oberato dal lavoro si muoveva in continuazione, l’artista insofferente di tanto fervore e pure emozionato per l’incontro non favorirono certo la realizzazione di un ritratto di qualità.

La prima versione del ritratto risultò particolarmente austera e non soddisfece né Verdi né lo stesso Boldini. Oggi quel dipinto è custodito nella Casa di Riposo per Musicisti di Milano.

La seconda versione invece, realizzata a pastello e in sole due ore, divenne un capolavoro e oggi è l’immagine più conosciuta nel mondo di Giuseppe Verdi.

On October 10, 1813, Giuseppe Verdi, one of the greatest opera composers and a symbol of the Italian Risorgimento, was born in Roncole di Busseto, in the province of Parma.

Giovanni Boldini wanted to pay homage to his musician friend by creating a magnificent pastel portrait for him in 1886, now owned by the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome.

This vibrant pastel portrait, whose gaze seems to penetrate the viewer, entering their soul, does justice to the composer’s character, with echoes of Rigoletto, Aida, and La Traviata seemingly providing a background.

Boldini painted Verdi in just two hours, from the front, half-length. He is wearing the overcoat he couldn’t live without, a silk scarf around his neck, and a black top hat perched on his head. The Maestro himself was astonished by the work’s realism as the artist himself.

Indeed, Boldini was so pleased with the portrait that he wanted to keep it for the rest of his life, considering it one of his finest works. He didn’t even want to sell Verdi’s portrait to the Prince of Wales, who would have paid a fortune for it.

You should know that the artist had created his first portrait in oils. In the spring of 1886, Verdi went to the artist’s studio at 11 Place Pigalle for his first session, accompanied by his wife Giuseppina Strepponi and his assistant Muzio.

It was a hectic session: Verdi, nervous because he was overwhelmed by his work, was constantly moving around; the artist, intolerant of so much fervor and also excited by the meeting, certainly did not favor the creation of a quality portrait.

The first version of the portrait was particularly austere and did not satisfy either Verdi or Boldini himself. Today, the painting is kept at the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti in Milan.

The second version, painted in pastel in just two hours, became a masterpiece and is now the most famous image of Giuseppe Verdi in the world.
