La scultura del giorno: la Madonna in adorazione del Ferrucci
La scultura del giorno di cui voglio parlarvi oggi è il bassorilievo in marmo realizzato da Francesco di Simone Ferrucci attorno al 1480 che ritrae la Madonna in adorazione del Bambino con un angelo.
Il Ferrucci nacque a Fiesole nel 1437 e fu uno scultore molto apprezzato per il suo stile elegante e raffinato.
Si formò nella bottega del babbo scultore Simone di Nanni e poi volle perfezionarsi andando a imparare da Desiderio da Settignano, allora già scultore affermato.
Il Ferrucci fu abile nello scolpire mirabili volti e aveva la capacità di rendere tangibili i sentimenti provati dalle persone raffigurate nelle proprie opere.
Armonia ed equilibrio sono sempre stati due tratti distintivi nelle sue scultore, proprio come nel mirabile bassorilievo della Madonna in adorazione del Bambino con un angelo, oggi custodita all’interno delle collezioni del Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in Massachusetts.
Osservate con quanta attenzione e, in uno spessore minimo, il Ferrucci sia stato in grado di far emergere la giovane Madonna, con un volto quasi angelico che molto ricorda le Madonne dipinte da Filippo Lippi.
In realtà la Madonna del Ferrucci è molto di più di una semplice citazione della Madonna col Bambino e i due angeli dipinta dal Lippi qualche anno prima, nel 1465 circa.
Il copricapo ha la stessa identica foggia come la posa della Vergine, a mani giunte e con il capo leggermente chinato.
Il Bambino, tenuto sulle ginocchia dall’angelo, ha in mano un frutto.
Il trono dove siede la Madonna ha invece una raffinata decorazione fatta da perline e foglie d’acanto.
Al Museo del Bargello è custodita un altro bassorilievo realizzato sempre dal Ferrucci, scolpito qualche anno prima e con un soggetto affine.
La Madonna però presenta un volto meno spigoloso e il Bambino ha un viso più realistico e meglio riuscito rispetto al bassorilievo di Boston.

The sculpture of the day that I want to talk to you about today is the marble bas-relief made by Francesco di Simone Ferrucci around 1480 that portrays the Madonna in adoration of the Child with an angel.
Ferrucci was born in Fiesole in 1437 and was a sculptor much appreciated for his elegant and refined style.
He trained in the workshop of his father, the sculptor Simone di Nanni, and then wanted to improve by learning from Desiderio da Settignano.
Ferrucci was skilled in sculpting wonderful faces and had the ability to make tangible the feelings felt by the people depicted in his works. Harmony and balance have always been two distinctive traits in his sculptors, just like in the wonderful bas-relief of the Madonna in adoration of the Child with an angel, now kept in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts.
Observe how carefully and in a minimal thickness, Ferrucci was able to bring out the young Madonna, with an almost angelic face that is very reminiscent of the Madonnas painted by Filippo Lippi.
In reality, Ferrucci’s Madonna is much more than a simple citation of the Madonna with Child and Two Angels painted by Lippi a few years earlier, around 1465.
The headdress has the exact same shape as the Virgin’s pose, with her hands clasped and her head slightly bowed.
The Child, held on the knees of the angel, is holding a fruit. The throne where the Madonna sits has a refined decoration made of beads and acanthus leaves.
The Bargello Museum houses another bas-relief also made by Ferruci, sculpted a few years earlier.
However, the Madonna has a less angular face and the Child has a more realistic and better-made face than the Boston bas-relief.
