The tomb of Julius II: the 76 blocks for the base
It was 9 July 1513 when I commissioned the stonemason Antonio da Pontassieve to install “the face that comes in front” of the base of the tomb of Julius II.
He was supposed to complete the work within a year for a fee of 450 ducats.
The base should have been 67 centimeters high and 22 centimeters wide.
The front of the base that I had assembled in a room adjacent to the courtyard of my house, in Macel de’ Corvi, was made up of 76 blocks of marble already assembled.
However, I had to reduce the height of the lower floor to adapt it to the pedestals of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, which Raphael, Bramante’s successor in managing the works for the Petrine factory, had changed at that time.
As I have told you on more than one occasion, the project of the tomb subsequently underwent several modifications and reductions and those blocks of the base were used only in part for the same purpose while others were reused in other areas of the funerary monument.
For the moment, your always Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you and will meet you in the next posts and on social media.
