La Madre: una delle sculture più riuscite di Arthur Lewin Funke
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è l’intensa Madre dell’artista tedesco Arthur Lewin Funke.
Lewing Funke è nato nel 1866 a Dresda e ha iniziato ad approcciarsi al mondo dell’arte frequentando una bottega in cui si intagliava l’avorio. In un secondo momento, a partire dal 1890, volle studiare arte iscrivendosi all’Accademia delle arti prussiana assieme al più celebre Albert Wolff.
Per due anni, dal 1895 al 1897, visse e lavorò a Roma dimorando a Villa Strohl-Fern, il palazzo eretto sul terreno di Villa Borghese celebre proprio per aver accolto decine di artisti poi divenuti celebri fra la fine dell’Ottocento e gli inizi del Novecento
La scultura della Madre è una delle più riuscite dell’artista. Struggente ed emozionante, mostra una madre completamente priva di vesti che si rannicchia portando al petto il figlio mentre dorme beatamente, con i piedi messi l’uno sull’altro.
Un’immagine intima, familiare e particolarmente emozionante alla quale Arthur Lewin Funk volle apporre la sua firma.
La Madre è stata donata al Metropolitan Museum dal proprietario Edward Adams nel 1908 e adesso fa parte dell sue collezioni di arte del Novecento.

Sculpture of the Day: The Loving Mother by Arthur Lewin Funke
The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the loving Mother by the German artist Arthur Lewin Funke.
Lewing Funke was born in 1866 in Dresden and began to approach the world of art by frequenting a workshop where ivory was carved. At a later time, starting from 1890, he wanted to study art by enrolling in the Prussian Academy of Arts together with the more famous Albert Wolff.
For two years, from 1895 to 1897, he lived and worked in Rome, staying at Villa Strohl-Fern, the palace built on the grounds of Villa Borghese famous for having welcomed dozens of artists who later became famous between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of of the twentieth century.
The sculpture of the Mother is one of the artist’s most successful. Poignant and emotional, it shows a mother completely stripped of clothes who curls up holding her son to her chest while she sleeps blissfully, with her feet placed one on top of the other.
An intimate, familiar and particularly emotional image to which Arthur Lewin Funk wanted to add his signature.
The Mother was donated to the Metropolitan Museum by its owner Edward Adams in 1908 and is now part of its collections of twentieth-century art.
