La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è l’Anima Dannata, realizzata da Gian Lorenzo Bernini nel 1619.

Il busto che ferma nel tempo tutta la disperazione della figura rappresentata, fu scolpito dall’artista quando aveva poco più di vent’anni ma già era in grado di imprimere al marmo uno stile unico e ben riconoscibile che avrebbe poi contraddistinto lo scultore per il resto della vita.

A sorprendere in quest’opera è la resa impeccabile del moto di disperazione che quasi sfigura il volto dell’uomo.

Gli occhi sgranati con le sopracciglia fortemente inarcate, la bocca spalancata che emette un grido atroce tanto reale che quasi sembra di poterlo ascoltare, fanno sembrare il soggetto un satiro caduto nella disperazione più totale.

La causa di tanto dolore pare essere sopraggiunta all’improvviso, in modo aspettato, sorprendendo il soggetto scolpito dal Bernini.

Non sono molti i documenti relativi ai vari passaggi che hanno portato il busto dell’Anima Dannata a Palazzo di Spagna a Roma noto come Palazzo Monaldesch, oggi sede dell’ambasciata di Spagna e nemmeno è noto il committente che chiese all’illustre artista la sua realizzazione.

La critica su questo capolavoro dell’artista è divisa in due: c’è chi sostiene sia la raffigurazione di un giovane oppresso dal tormento che guardando in basso vede gli orrori dell’Inferno e chi pensa piuttosto alla raffigurazione di un satiro, un soggetto pagano dunque.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Damned Soul, created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1619.

The bust that freezes all the desperation of the represented figure in time was sculpted by the artist when he was just over twenty years old but he was already able to give the marble a unique and easily recognizable style that would later distinguish the sculptor for the rest of life.

What surprises in this work is the impeccable rendering of the motion of despair that almost disfigures the man’s face.

The wide eyes with the strongly arched eyebrows, the wide open mouth that emits an atrocious cry so real that it almost seems to be able to hear it, make the subject look like a satyr who has fallen into total despair.

The cause of so much pain seems to have come suddenly, in an expected way, surprising the subject sculpted by Bernini.

There are not many documents relating to the various passages that brought the bust of the Damned Soul to the Palazzo di Spagna in Rome known as Palazzo Monaldesch, today the seat of the Spanish embassy, nor is the client known who asked the illustrious artist for his realization.

Criticism of this artist’s masterpiece is divided into two: there are those who argue both the depiction of a young man oppressed by torment who, looking down, sees the horrors of Hell and those who think rather of the depiction of a satyr, a pagan subject so.
