Come vi ho raccontato più volte, non era mio interesse disegnare, dipingere né tantomeno scolpire animali. Certo ci sono delle eccezioni nella mia produzioni artistica come per esempio la scimmietta che sta dietro la gamba dello Schiavo Morente, le bestie che si vedono nel Sacrificio di Noè o il Barbagianni della Notte nella Sagrestia Nuova.

Amavo gli animali tanto che nella mia casa di Roma c’erano il mio amato cavallo, un buon numero di galline con messer gallo e una moltitudine di gatti e gattini.

Perché dunque non amavo raffigurare animali?

Semplicemente preferivo di gran lunga dare la precedenza agli studi anatomici delle persone e la rappresentazione dell’uomo, creato a immagine e somiglianza di Dio.

Fra i disegni miei giunti fino ai vostri giorni ce n’è uno del quale vi voglio parlare. Appartiene alle collezioni di Casa Buonarroti e comprende gli studi per un cavallo. Gli studiosi a lungo hanno dibattuto sull’attribuzione a me di tal foglio così come la destinazione di quei disegni.

E’ molto probabile che gli studi del cavallo li realizzai mentre stavo lavorando all’affresco cella Conversione di San Paolo nella Cappella Paolina per affrescare poi il cavallo che disarciona Saulo nel momento della folgorazione sulla via per Damasco.

The singular studies for a horse

As I have told you several times, it was not my interest to draw, paint or sculpt animals. Of course there are exceptions in my artistic productions such as the monkey behind the leg of the Dying Slave, the beasts seen in Noah’s Sacrifice or the Barn Owl of the Night in the New Sacristy.

I loved animals so much that in my home in Rome there were my beloved horse, a good number of hens with messer rooster and a multitude of cats and kittens.

So why was I not fond of depicting animals?

I simply preferred by far to give precedence to the anatomical studies of people and the representation of man, created in the image and likeness of God.

Among my drawings that have come down to your days there is one I want to talk to you about. It belongs to the Casa Buonarroti collections and includes studies for a horse. Scholars have long debated the attribution of this sheet to me as well as the destination of those drawings.

It is very likely that I carried out the studies of the horse shortly before putting my hand to the fresco in the Conversion of St. Paul in the Pauline Chapel to then fresco the horse that throws Saul off at the moment of the electrocution on the way to Damascus.
