Curiosità sulle fontane gemelle di Piazza San Pietro
Piazza San Pietro ospita due fontane gemelle realizzate però da due diversi artisti in epoche differenti: una è di fine Quattrocento mentre l’altra è più recente: venne realizzata nel 1667.
La più antica è quella che si trova a destra per chi arriva in piazza da via della Conciliazione mentre l’altra fu fatta realizzare dal Bernini come copia esatta della precedente. La fontana più antica però venne per così dire modificata dal Maderno agli inizi del Seicento. In pratica rovesciò sotto sopra il catino superiore per far rompere il getto d’acqua invece che raccoglierlo al suo interno. La sua intuizione servì a rompere il getto d’acqua creando una sorta di pioggia sottile di grande effetto.
Considerate che fino a non molti anni fa il getto d’acqua era molto più potente di quello che vedete oggi. Lo zampillo sfiorava gli otto metri d’altezza e le fontane avevano un effetto decisamente spettacolare: sembravano molto più grandi all’occhio di quello che in realtà sono. Nella foto della vecchia cartolina del 1955 a seguire, vedete proprio la fontana quattrocentesca prima del restauro.
Fu infatti papa Paolo VI a volere la riduzione del getto e l’inserimento all’interno delle due fontane di un sistema di riciclo dell’acqua per evitare sprechi.
Certamente prima dell’intervento le due fontane erano molto più spettacolari. Nonostante ciò continuano ad affascinare e a rendere la piazza ancora più viva con il caratteristico rumore che fa l’acqua che sgorga e cade.

Curiosities on the twin fountains of Piazza San Pietro
Piazza San Pietro hosts two twin fountains, however, created by two different artists in different eras: one is from the late fifteenth century while the other is more recent: it was built in 1667.
The oldest is the one on the right for those coming to the square from via della Conciliazione while the other was commissioned by Bernini as an exact copy of the previous one. The oldest fountain, however, was so to speak modified by Maderno in the early seventeenth century. In practice, he tipped the upper basin upside down to break the jet of water instead of collecting it inside. His intuition served to break the jet of water creating a kind of subtle rain of great effect.
Consider that until not many years ago the water jet was much more powerful than what you see today. The jet was almost eight meters high and the fountains had a decidedly spectacular effect: they seemed much larger than they actually are. In the photo of the old postcard from 1955 to follow, you see just the fifteenth-century fountain before the restoration.
It was in fact Pope Paul VI who wanted the reduction of the jet and the insertion of a water recycling system inside the two fountains to avoid waste.
Certainly before the intervention the two fountains were much more spectacular. Despite this they continue to fascinate and make the square even more alive with the characteristic noise that makes the water that flows and falls.
