“Et io Jacobo Gallo prometto al reverendissimo Monsignore che lo dicto Michelangelo farà la dicta opera in fra un anno e sarà la più bella opera di marmo che sia oge in Roma e che maesto niuno la farìa megliore oge” Così scriveva Jacopo Galli al cardinale francese Jean Bilhéres de Lagraulas facendo da garante per la preziosa Pietà Vaticana ancora tutta da ideare e da scolpire.

Jean Bilhéres de Lagraulas era l’ambasciatore del re di Francia Carlo IIX presso Papa Alessandro VI e per lui mi impegnai a realizzare la Pietà che ben conoscete per 450 ducati. Il contratto che firmai il 27 agosto del 1498, mi obbligava a concludere l’opera in non più di  un anno.

Con in tasca 150 ducati d’anticipo e una lettera di raccomandazione scritta dal cardinale agli Anziani di Lucca, mi avviai verso le cave di Carrara in sella al mi cavallo baio per cercare un concio di bianco che fosse adatto all’opera immaginata.

Ci passai parecchi mesi lassù, arrampicato fra quelle montagne fredde che mi parevano così poco adatte alla vita umana. Alla fine riuscii a trovare ciò che stavo cercando: un concio largo poco più di un metro di qualità eccellente.

Tornato a Roma con il prezioso bottino mi misi subito all’opera per realizzare una delle opere più note e amate ancora oggi.

Il sempre vostro Michelangelo Buonarroti per il momento vi saluta lasciandovi le parole che scrisse il Vasari proprio in merito alla mia Pietà Vaticana:

“…alla quale opera non pensi mai scultore nè artefice raro poter aggiungere di disegno, né di grazia, né con fatica poter mai di finitezza, pulitezza e di straforare il marmo tanto con arte, quanto Michel Agnolo vi fece, perchè si scorge in quella tutto il valore et il potere dell’arte…”

“And I Jacobo Gallo promise the most reverend Monsignor that Michelangelo will make this work in a year and it will be the most beautiful marble work in Rome today and that no masterful master could do it better today” So wrote Jacopo Galli to the French cardinal Jean Bilhéres de Lagraulas acting as guarantor for the precious Vatican Pietà still to be designed and sculpted.

Jean Bilhéres de Lagraulas was the ambassador of the King of France Charles IIX to Pope Alexander VI and for him I undertook to make the Pietà you know well for 450 ducats. The contract I signed on 27 August 1498 obliged me to complete the work in no more than a year.

With 150 ducats in advance and a letter of recommendation written by the cardinal to the elders of Lucca. I set off for the Carrara quarries on my bay horse to look for a segment of white that was suitable for the imagined work.

I spent several months up there, climbing among those cold mountains which seemed so unsuitable to human life. In the end, I managed to find what I was looking for: a block just over a meter wide of excellent quality.

Back in Rome with the precious loot, I immediately set to work to create one of the most famous and loved works still today.
