La scultura del giorno di cui voglio parlarvi oggi è l’Angelo della Notte scolpito da Giulio Monteverde nel 1895.

E’ una delle più belle e affascinanti sculture del Cimitero Monumentale del Verano ed è collocata al di sotto di un’arcata del Quadriportico. Fu Primo Zonca, sul finire dell’Ottocento, a commissionare l’opera a Monteverde per decorare la tomba di famiglia.

Zonca suggerì all’artista il tema della scultura ovvero la Poesia, proprio come si può leggere nell’iscrizione posizionata ai piedi della figura alata: “L’arte da lui amata si rispecchiasse in questi marmi e lo confortasse anche nel sepolcro”.

Il committente morì sei anni dopo, il 6 agosto del 1901, e tutt’oggi le sue spoglie si trovano all’interno del sepolcro, sorvegliate dall’Angelo della Notte.

La scultura di Monteverde ha molte affinità con l’Angelo della Morte che scolpì qualche anno prima per la tomba Oneto del Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno, a Genova.

La rielaborazione romana ha di diverso la posa della figura alata che siede sulla tomba e sembra abbia un aspetto pensieroso o come se fosse in attesa di qualcosa o qualcuno.

Con la mano sinistra sostiene il capo e ha uno sguardo che pare mirare lontano, oltre il visibile.

Le piume delle ali, molto particolareggiate, creano un arco appoggiandosi sulla tomba, contribuendo a dare volume all’intera figura ma anche un aspetto ancora più etereo.

La figura androgina ha una veste lunga, drappeggiata nella parte finale e bordata al collo con una serie di stelle.

Sculpture of the Day: The Angel of the Night by Giulio Monteverde

The sculpture of the day that I want to talk to you about today is the Angel of the Night sculpted by Giulio Monteverde in 1895.

It is one of the most beautiful and fascinating sculptures in the Monumental Cemetery of Verano and is located under an arch of the Quadriportico. It was Primo Zonca, at the end of the nineteenth century, who commissioned the work to Monteverde to decorate the family tomb.

Zonca suggested the theme of the sculpture to the artist, namely Poetry, just as can be read in the inscription placed at the foot of the winged figure: “The art he loved was reflected in these marbles and comforted him even in the tomb”.

The patron died six years later, on August 6, 1901, and his remains are still inside the tomb, guarded by the Angel of the Night.

Monteverde’s sculpture has many affinities with the Angel of Death that he sculpted a few years earlier for the Oneto tomb in the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, in Genoa.

The Roman reworking is different in the pose of the winged figure that sits on the tomb and seems to have a thoughtful look or as if it were waiting for something or someone. With its left hand it supports its head and has a gaze that seems to aim far away, beyond the visible.

The feathers of the wings, very detailed, create an arch resting on the tomb, helping to give volume to the entire figure but also an even more ethereal appearance.

The androgynous figure has a long robe, draped at the bottom and bordered at the neck with a series of stars.
