La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è l’Angelo della Morte di Giulio Monteverde.

L’opera in candido marmo fu scolpita dall’artista nel 1822 su commissione di Francesco Oneto. Oneto era un ricco benestante genovese presidente della Banca Generale che volle onorare la memoria della propria famiglia con un’opera maestosa da collocare nel Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno, a Genova.

Se fino al momento per i monumenti funebri venivano scolpiti congiunti in lacrime o opere che in qualche modo esaltassero le virtù del caro estinto, Monteverde realizza qualcosa di completamente differente. Preferisce dar forma con mazzuolo e scalpello a un angelo che medita sul mistero della vita e della morte mentre veglia sulla tomba.

L’Angelo della Morte di Monteverde ha un aspetto affascinante e incredibilmente attrattivo.

Lo sguardo glaciale del giovane androgino conquista chi ha la buona sorte di guardarlo dritto negli occhi. Non mostra pietà né altri sentimenti e seduce con il richiamo della morte.

Con questa superba scultura l’artista rivoluzione l’arte funeraria facendola virare dal realismo al linguaggio decadente e simbolista.

Più che un angelo che porta l’anima del defunto verso il Paradiso, quello di Monteverde sembra un testimone dell’accaduto e non si adopera per consolare gli avventori.

Nella mano destra regge la tromba, la stessa del Giudizio Universale mentre le due grandi ali fanno da cornice al suo corpo panneggiato con una veste che ne sottolinea le forme.

L’Angelo della Morte riscosse un enorme successo tanto che fu adoperato come modello da un gran numero di artisti per dar forma alle loro opere. Sono tante le imitazioni che vennero realizzate nel corso dei decenni a seguire sia nel medesimo Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno che in altri cimiteri nel resto dell’Europa e nel continente americano.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Angel of Death by Giulio Monteverde.

The white marble work was sculpted by the artist in 1822 on commission from Francesco Oneto. Oneto was a wealthy Genoese who was also president of the General Bank who wanted to honor the memory of his family with a majestic work to be placed in the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, in Genoa.

With this superb sculpture, the artist changes funerary art by turning it from realism to a decadent and symbolist language.

More than an angel who carries the soul of the deceased to Heaven, the one from Monteverde seems to be a witness to what happened and does not seem to take any action to console the patrons.

In his right hand the angel holds the trumpet, the same as in the Last Judgment, while the two large wings frame his body draped in a garment that underlines its shapes.

Monteverde’s Angel of Death was such a huge success that it was used as a model by a large number of artists to shape their works. There are many imitations that were made over the following decades both in the same Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno and in other cemeteries in the rest of Europe and in the Americas.
